Chapter 3

Dr. Nathan Pierce had delivered more than four thousand babies.

He had seen panic, joy, grief, relief, fear, and family secrets disguised as scheduling conflicts.

He had learned to remain steady.

A steady doctor keeps mothers calm.

A steady doctor keeps newborns safe.

A steady doctor does not let personal memories enter the delivery room.

But the mark beneath the baby’s ear broke through twenty-nine years of discipline.

It was small.

Not dramatic.

Not shaped like anything people would notice at first glance.

A tiny dark crescent tucked just below the left ear, near the soft fold of skin where the blanket had shifted.

Nathan had seen that mark before.

Not on a chart.

Not in a textbook.

In a family photograph no one outside a certain circle was supposed to remember.

His hand tightened instinctively, then relaxed immediately when he remembered the infant in his arms.

Safe support first.

Emotion later.

Vivian saw his face and became frightened.

“Doctor, what’s wrong with my baby?”

Nathan should have reassured her instantly.

The baby was breathing.

Small lungs working.

Color good.

Cry strong.

No visible emergency connected to the mark.

But the question lodged in his throat because nothing was wrong with the baby.

Something was wrong with the story around him.

Nathan looked at Vivian’s face.

Exhausted.

Pale.

Terrified.

She had arrived without a husband, without family, without a bag packed properly, and with legal fear all over her medical intake notes.

Now Julian Sterling stood in the doorway claiming the child as if paternity were a property announcement.

Nathan had known the Sterling name for years.

Everyone in Seattle medicine knew it.

Donations.

Board seats.

Private wings.

Old money wrapped in new charity.

But Nathan knew another Sterling story too.

A buried one.
