Chapter 9

Vivian asked the question no one wanted to answer.

“Does this have something to do with Julian’s family?”

Julian turned sharply.

“No.”

Too fast.

Nathan saw Vivian notice.

She had been married to Julian long enough to recognize the speed of a lie.

Nathan spoke carefully.

“I cannot explain everything yet.”

Julian laughed.

“Because there is nothing to explain.”

Nathan ignored him.

“But the mark is familiar to me.”

Vivian looked down at the baby.

Her fingers trembled against the striped blanket.

“Familiar how?”

Nathan’s throat tightened.

He could not say the full history.

Not without records.

Not without protecting Vivian.

Not without knowing whether the child’s identification had already been entered into systems Julian could reach.

He chose the narrowest truth.

“I have seen it in connection with a family record that was removed from public review.”

Julian’s face went pale.

Vivian stared at him.

“Julian?”

He did not answer her.

He looked only at Nathan.

“What did you just say?”

There it was again.

Not outrage over a false claim.

Fear over a recognized phrase.

Removed from public review.

Nathan had chosen it deliberately.

A phrase only someone aware of the buried record would fear.

Julian lowered his extended hand completely.

His shoulders changed.

Less arrogant now.

More guarded.

Vivian saw the transformation and understood with growing horror that the question was no longer whether Julian wanted the baby.

It was why he feared what the baby proved.
