Claire wanted to believe Phase Two meant custody.
Nothing more.
Miriam did not speculate.
Detective Foster refused to speculate.
But everyone moved faster.
Noah’s temporary caregiver was relocated to a protected address.
Daniel’s visitation was suspended.
The Bennett Holdings vote was postponed under court order.
Phase One had failed.
So what was Phase Two?
Inside Daniel’s metal case, investigators found a trust diagram.
Claire’s inheritance flowed to her.
If Claire died, it flowed to Noah.
If Noah inherited as a minor, an independent trustee controlled the assets.
Daniel could not access them directly.
Unless the trustee changed.
A draft petition named a proposed successor trustee.
Dr. Harold Crane.
Claire stared.
“He planned to put Crane over Noah’s money.”
Miriam nodded.
“But only under certain conditions.”
The current trustee was Evelyn’s longtime accountant, Peter Sloan.
Healthy.
Independent.
Difficult to remove.
Daniel’s file contained allegations against Peter.
Financial misconduct.
Cognitive decline.
Conflicts.
All unsupported.
Another manufactured incapacity case.

Claire whispered:
“He was going to do this over and over.”
Until every obstacle became “unfit.”
Then Foster found a note.

Claire felt cold.

Police warned Peter immediately.
He told them Evelyn had expected attempts to remove him.

“What safeguard?” Claire asked.
Peter hesitated.
“A sealed voting instruction.”
“For whom?”
“For you.”
Claire stared.
“Why didn’t I know?”
“Because Evelyn instructed me not to disclose it until someone challenged your capacity.”
The scheme itself triggered the protection designed against it.
Peter opened the sealed document.
Evelyn had anticipated pressure.
She wrote:
If Claire is ever declared medically incapable within five years of my death, no spouse, guardian, physician, or family member may exercise her Bennett Holdings vote. Authority transfers to an independent three-person trust panel.
Daniel could never have gained the vote through Claire’s incapacity.
Miriam almost laughed.
“He poisoned you for a legal path that didn’t exist.”
Claire felt no satisfaction.
Then Peter added:
“Unless he had the original trust amended.”
Margaret Vale.
The estate attorney.
She had access to drafting records.
Investigators searched her files.
They found an unsigned amendment that removed Evelyn’s safeguard.
Prepared three months before Evelyn’s death.
Evelyn refused to sign.
Margaret kept trying.
Claire asked:
“Did Daniel know it was unsigned?”
Probably not initially.
But one email proved Margaret later told him.
MARGARET: Claire’s incapacity alone does not solve control. We need Sloan removed.
DANIEL: Crane says he can handle Sloan.

Claire thought about the wooden moon silently recording them while they believed they controlled the story.
Then the forensic team found another hidden file inside Daniel’s case.

Two days before Claire’s final hospitalization.
Behind him stood a man.
Harold Crane.
Peter stared when shown the image.
“I never saw him.”
The next image showed Crane near Peter’s car.
No evidence of harm.
But enough for police to inspect the vehicle.
They found a tracking device.
Phase Two may already have begun.
Then Peter revealed something else.
Evelyn had not died of natural illness as publicly stated.
Claire stared.
“What?”
“She died after a sudden medical collapse during a hospital admission.”
Claire felt the room become still.
“What caused it?”
“Her doctors never fully agreed.”
“Who was involved in her care?”
Peter closed his eyes.
“Harold Crane consulted.”
Claire’s pulse hammered.
Crane appeared in Richard’s death.
Claire’s poisoning.
Peter’s surveillance.
And Evelyn’s final hospitalization.
