Chapter 3 - the illness that moved with her

Claire returned to Savannah Memorial under police protection.

Dr. Amelia Brooks met her in a private consultation room.

Miriam sat beside her.

Detective Foster stood near the door.

Daniel and Celeste were not present.

Dr. Brooks opened Claire’s chart.

“We have been treating the effects of your illness. We have not understood the cause.”

Claire gave a tired smile.

“I noticed.”

Dr. Brooks did not smile back.

“Your bloodwork shows abnormalities that have fluctuated in a pattern we did not initially recognize.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“What pattern?”

“You improve when admitted.”

“I get IV fluids.”

“Yes.”

“And rest.”

“Yes.”

“But your symptoms worsen again after you return home.”

Claire looked at Detective Foster.

“That could be anything.”

“It could.”

Dr. Brooks continued.

“But we also found unusual trace residues on clothing your sister brought from home.”

Claire stared.

“What kind?”

“Enough to justify testing your environment.”

The doctor kept details general.

Some exposure appeared external.

Possibly household.

Possibly repeated.

Nothing yet proved intentional poisoning.

Claire listened without breathing properly.

Daniel’s petition described her as someone who made herself sick for attention.

Celeste had slapped her while repeating it.

But what if Claire had been getting sick because of something inside her own house?

Detective Foster asked:

“Who handled your laundry?”

Claire thought.

“Mostly me.”

“When you became weaker?”

“Daniel.”

“And his mother.”

Foster wrote that down.

Claire shook her head.

“Celeste hated me. That doesn’t mean—”

“You don’t need to decide what it means.”

Miriam asked:

“What about Noah?”

Dr. Brooks answered carefully.

“Noah’s recent screening is reassuring. We are continuing appropriate pediatric evaluation.”

Claire closed her eyes.

For the first time all day, she breathed.

Then remembered the bottle.

Daniel standing over it.

“What did he put in Noah’s bottle?”

“We don’t know.”

The nursery recording was being processed frame by frame.

The next useful section came from three nights later.

Daniel again entered the nursery after midnight.

This time, he did not approach the crib immediately.

He stood beneath the wooden moon.

Looked directly up.

Then covered the camera lens with his hand.

The image went black.

Claire stared at the frozen frame.

“He knew.”

Detective Foster nodded.

“At least by then.”

“Then why didn’t he remove it?”

“He apparently tried.”

Miriam looked at the timeline.

“The ornament disappeared the next morning.”

Claire remembered.

Daniel said it broke.

Then ordered a replacement mobile.

Foster asked:

“Where is the wooden moon now?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel claimed he threw it away.

Police checked the household trash records.

No evidence.

Then a search warrant was approved for the Morgan home.

Claire was not allowed inside.

She waited at the hospital while investigators searched.

They found the nursery wall mounting.

Several household cleaners.

Medications.

Financial files.

Nothing immediately dramatic.

Then Detective Foster called.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“We found the moon.”

Her grip tightened around the phone.

“Where?”

“Daniel’s locked workshop cabinet.”

Claire closed her eyes.

He had not thrown it away.

He had hidden it.

Inside the wooden casing, forensic technicians found scratches around the camera mount.

Someone had attempted to remove internal components.

But Celeste’s handmade gift had been constructed with two cavities.

Daniel found one.

He missed the other.

A tiny secondary storage chip remained.

Claire whispered:

“More footage?”

“Possibly.”

The chip contained fragments older than the memory card Claire had recovered.

Most were corrupted.

One was not.

The timestamp dated back nearly three months.

Before Claire’s first hospitalization.

Before Daniel filed anything.

Before Celeste began telling relatives Claire was unstable.

The footage showed Daniel and another person entering the nursery.

The other person’s face stayed outside the frame.

Only one hand appeared.

A woman’s hand.

Pale manicure.

Large emerald ring.

The woman handed Daniel a document.

Daniel whispered:

“She can’t know yet.”

The woman answered:

“Then stop letting her ask questions.”

Claire recognized the voice immediately.

Celeste.

Miriam looked toward her.

“You’re sure?”

Claire nodded.

Celeste had known something.

Not necessarily everything.

But enough to be inside the nursery discussing secrecy with Daniel months before Claire collapsed.

Then the recording captured another sentence.

Celeste:

“If this touches Noah, I’m done.”

Daniel answered:

“It won’t.”

The courtroom slap suddenly looked different.

Celeste had defended her son viciously.

But months earlier, she had apparently warned him about whatever he was doing.

👉 Celeste had secretly confronted Daniel months before Claire became critically ill—and warned him not to let his plan affect Noah.
