Chapter 7 - what Celeste removed from the moon

Celeste watched the clip three times.

Then she began to cry.

Detective Foster did not speak.

Finally Celeste said:

“I put the camera there.”

Claire stared at the remote feed.

Celeste had bought the wooden moon.

She had commissioned the hidden camera.

Not Daniel.

“Why?” Foster asked.

Celeste looked miserable.

“Because I was afraid of my son.”

Claire’s anger stopped for a moment.

“When?”

“Before Noah was born.”

Celeste explained that Daniel had started behaving differently during Claire’s pregnancy.

Obsessive about money.

Secretive calls.

Documents arriving at the house.

Then one night Daniel told Celeste that if Claire ever left, he would “make sure she couldn’t take anything with her.”

Celeste remembered Richard.

Remembered how Daniel stored weaknesses.

So she ordered the moon with a concealed security camera from a specialist craftsman.

“You were spying on us,” Claire said.

Celeste looked toward the screen.

“Yes.”

“Why not warn me?”

“Because I kept hoping I was wrong.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

Everyone kept hoping instead of acting.

“And what did you remove from it?”

Celeste’s face tightened.

“A second card.”

The room became silent.

Foster leaned forward.

“Where is it?”

“I hid it.”

“Why?”

“Because it had something Daniel could use against me.”

Claire’s pulse quickened.

“What?”

Celeste refused to answer until her attorney intervened.

Limited protection was negotiated regarding old evidence unrelated to Claire’s poisoning.

Then Celeste told them.

The older memory card contained footage from the first weeks after Noah’s birth.

Daniel had brought Celeste into the nursery and confronted her about Richard.

Not his death.

Something that happened before it.

Richard Morgan had apparently learned Daniel was not his biological son.

Claire stared.

Daniel had never known?

Celeste said he discovered it after Richard died.

Richard had found an old paternity report.

Daniel later found the same copy.

For years he used it to punish Celeste.

“You lied to him about his father?” Foster asked.

“Yes.”

“Who was his biological father?”

Celeste closed her eyes.

“Nathan Cole.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Nathan.

Richard’s best friend.

The man who helped Daniel after Richard died.

The man Daniel later blackmailed.

The unidentified adviser in the poisoning scheme.

Daniel’s biological father.

Celeste continued through tears.

She and Nathan had one affair.

Daniel was born the next year.

Richard raised him without knowing until shortly before his death.

Nathan never knew for certain until much later.

Foster asked:

“Does Daniel know Nathan is his biological father?”

“Yes.”

“Since when?”

“Three years.”

Claire felt the case rearrange itself.

Daniel had not merely blackmailed Nathan over destroyed business records.

He had discovered Nathan was his father.

Nathan had given Daniel a job.

Money.

Protection.

Perhaps out of guilt.

Perhaps love.

Perhaps fear.

“What was on the card you removed?” Foster asked.

Celeste stared.

“Daniel telling Nathan that if he didn’t help him with Claire, he would expose everything.”

Claire went cold.

“Help him how?”

“He wanted Nathan to get materials through the company.”

The secret substances.

Nathan had minimized his role.

He had known more.

Foster immediately ordered Nathan re-interviewed.

This time, when shown Celeste’s statement, Nathan broke.

He admitted he supplied Daniel with compounds under false pretenses.

Daniel claimed he needed them for a client demonstration involving taste masking and stability testing.

Nathan realized later that Daniel was using at least one of them on Claire.

He confronted him.

Daniel threatened to expose the old Morgan scandal and Nathan’s document destruction.

“But you still kept helping him,” Foster said.

Nathan looked down.

“At first.”

“How long?”

“Two shipments.”

“Enough to make Claire critically ill?”

“I didn’t know he was increasing exposure.”

Claire shut her eyes.

Nathan continued.

“When I realized how sick she was, I told him to stop.”

“You did more than that.”

Nathan looked toward Foster.

“What?”

She played the nursery audio.

You asked for vulnerability, not a corpse.

Nathan covered his face.

“Yes.”

Foster asked:

“Where is Celeste’s second memory card?”

Celeste gave them the answer.

Inside Richard Morgan’s old grave marker.

A waterproof capsule beneath the bronze nameplate.

She had hidden it there because Daniel hated visiting the cemetery.

Police recovered it.

The card contained several videos.

One was Daniel threatening Nathan.

Another showed Daniel speaking to someone else through a video call.

The other person’s face was not visible.

Only a voice.

Female.

Daniel said:

“Claire’s too sick. If she dies before the transfer, Noah inherits.”

The woman answered:

“Then keep her alive.”

Claire felt every muscle tighten.

Daniel had known exactly what happened financially if she died.

The woman continued:

“You need incapacity, not death. Follow the sequence.”

Miriam whispered:

“Another person.”

Daniel had Nathan supplying materials.

Celeste covering up.

But someone else appeared to be directing the legal timing.

Claire stared at the audio waveform.

The voice sounded vaguely familiar.

Then she realized where she had heard it.

At her aunt Evelyn’s funeral.

The estate attorney.

Margaret Vale.

👉 The second card revealed Daniel was receiving instructions from the attorney handling Claire’s multimillion-dollar inheritance—and she specifically told him Claire had to remain alive but incapacitated.
