Chapter 13 - the bottle under the crib

The wooden-moon footage still contained one damaged block.
Twenty-six minutes from the night Claire became critically ill.
Forensic technicians reconstructed fragments.
Daniel entered the nursery.
Placed Claire’s water bottle on the dresser.
Made a phone call.
Crane’s voice was partially audible.
Then Daniel looked beneath Noah’s crib.
He removed a second bottle.
Claire frowned.
“I’ve never seen that.”
The bottle was small.
Amber glass.
No label visible.
Daniel held it for several seconds.
Then whispered:
“Why is this here?”
That sentence mattered.
He had not placed it there.
Someone else had.
Daniel called Celeste.
No answer.
Then Nathan.
No answer.
Then Crane.
“Did you leave something in Noah’s room?”
A pause.
Daniel’s face changed.
“What do you mean, don’t touch it?”
Claire leaned forward.
The recording glitched.
When it resumed, the amber bottle was gone.
Daniel was wiping the dresser.
Then he looked toward the wooden moon.
Realized the camera was there.
And reached for it.
That was the night the ornament disappeared.
Detective Foster searched Daniel’s workshop again.
The amber bottle was not there.
But a photograph of it appeared on his phone.
Daniel had photographed the bottom.
A handwritten code.
HB-17.
Investigators traced it to Harold Crane’s private research inventory from decades earlier.
Not a current commercial product.
Not something Daniel purchased.
Claire asked:
“What was it?”
Foster answered carefully.
“An old research sample associated with Crane’s consulting work. We are not yet certain of the contents.”
The important question was not what exactly it contained.
It was why Crane had placed or caused it to be placed beneath Noah’s crib.
Daniel seemed surprised.
Maybe Crane had been inside the house.
Security records showed one visit during Claire’s illness.
Daniel claimed Crane came to discuss business.
Claire remembered sleeping nearly the entire afternoon.
Celeste was there.
Noah was there.
Crane had access.
The next wooden-moon fragment showed a man’s lower body entering the nursery during that visit.
Older.
Dark trousers.
Cane.
Harold Crane used a cane.
He crouched beside the crib.
Placed something underneath.
No face.
But the timing matched.
Claire stared.
Daniel had poisoned her.
That remained clear.
But Crane had also introduced something Daniel did not appear to expect.
Why?
Detective Foster confronted Daniel with the clip.
His attorney attempted to stop questioning.
Daniel spoke anyway.
“I didn’t know he put that there.”
“What was HB-17?” Foster asked.
“I don’t know.”
“You photographed it.”
“Because I didn’t know.”
“Did you give it to Claire?”
“No.”
“Did Crane?”
Daniel looked genuinely frightened.
“I don’t know.”
Foster leaned closer.
“Why are you afraid of him now?”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Now?”
He looked toward the camera.
“You think this was my plan?”
Claire watched from the hospital.
Daniel continued.
“I wanted Claire weak for court.”
Miriam whispered:
“He’s admitting it.”
Daniel’s attorney grabbed his arm.
Daniel pulled away.
“I did it. Fine. I made her sick.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
There it was.
Direct.
“But Crane told me exactly how to make the symptoms look inconsistent.”
Foster asked:
“And Evelyn?”
Daniel went silent.
“What did Crane do to Evelyn?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did Margaret mean when she said he went too far?”
Daniel looked toward his attorney.
Then whispered:
“Evelyn changed her mind.”
“About what?”
“The acquisition.”
“She was already against it.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“She was going to expose the company.”
Claire frowned.
“What company?”
“Not Bennett.”
Foster waited.
“Which company?”
Daniel looked terrified.
“Morgan Clinical Logistics.”
Claire stared.
Daniel’s own company?
Daniel continued:
“Evelyn found old records inside Bennett Holdings. Crane had been using care facilities to route fraudulent medical contracts for years.”
That connected Richard’s old fraud investigation to Evelyn.
Richard discovered distribution fraud fourteen years ago.
Crane buried it.
Evelyn discovered modern traces.
Then died.
Claire inherited her shares.
Daniel’s company sat directly in the middle.
Claire whispered:
“So the inheritance wasn’t only money.”
Miriam nodded.
“It gave you access to records.”
Daniel had needed control because Claire, once informed, could discover what Evelyn found.
Then Foster asked:
“What was HB-17 for?”
Daniel looked toward the table.
“Crane said if the court plan failed, Claire couldn’t be allowed to review Evelyn’s archive.”
Claire felt ice move through her.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked directly at the interrogation camera.
May you like
“For the first time, I think he expected you to die.”
👉 Daniel finally admitted he made Claire sick for the custody scheme—but claimed Dr. Crane secretly escalated the plan when Claire became a threat to decades of hidden medical fraud.
