Chapter 1

Ex-Husband Crushes Her Broken Foot Before Courtroom Video Exposes His Fake Robbery.

Daniel Mercer smiled at me across the divorce table while grinding his polished shoe into my broken foot.

No one else could see beneath the wood.

Above it, he looked composed.

Expensive navy suit.

Perfect tie.

One hand resting beside his water glass as though we were discussing property instead of the night I had nearly died.

My gray orthopedic boot sat beneath the chair, loosened because of swelling. Daniel had found the exposed edge of my white sock and pressed down slowly, testing how much pain I could hide.

My throat brace kept me from turning quickly.

The healing cut on my lip pulled when I breathed.

He leaned closer, still smiling for Judge Elena Ruiz.

“Take the hundred dollars and disappear.”

One hundred dollars.

That was his final offer after nine years of marriage, three shared properties, and a staged robbery designed to leave me too frightened to testify.

My attorney, Maya Chen, saw my fingers tighten around the blue evidence folder.

Daniel pressed harder.

I did not cry out.

I reached beneath the folder and removed a small black flash drive.

His smile flickered.

I slid the drive across the table.

“Play the route history.”

My damaged voice barely carried.

Judge Ruiz looked at my throat brace.

Then at the walking boot.

Then at Daniel’s suddenly rigid posture.

She signaled to the clerk.

The courtroom monitor turned on.

Dark dashcam footage appeared.

My car moved through a Chicago intersection at night.

A black SUV followed.

The same SUV appeared at the next light.

And the next.

Daniel removed his foot immediately.

Then his recorded voice filled the courtroom.

“Make it look like a robbery.”

His face collapsed.

He lunged toward the flash drive.

Judge Ruiz struck the gavel once and rose.

“Deputies, restrain Mr. Mercer.”

Two sheriff’s deputies rushed from the rear doors and seized Daniel’s arms before he reached me.

He struggled as they pulled him away from the table.

I remained seated, breathing carefully through the brace.

Then I touched a second unreadable file on the monitor.

“The second file names the driver.”

Daniel stopped fighting.

His eyes found mine.

And for the first time since the attack, he looked more injured than I felt.
