Chapter 6

The driver was not a professional criminal.
That was Daniel’s second major mistake.
Professional criminals understand silence has value.
Desperate men negotiate it.
The driver worked intermittently for one of Daniel’s construction subcontractors.
He had debt.
A suspended commercial license.
A sealed complaint involving stolen materials.
Daniel chose him because he was controllable.
But control disappears when one side realizes prison is closer than payment.
Luis found the driver’s car entering the accountant’s private garage three days after the robbery.
The driver remained inside for nineteen minutes.
When he left, he carried an envelope.
The accountant later recorded the payment as “emergency transportation consultation.”
Maya subpoenaed the accountant’s internal calendar.
One meeting entry had been deleted.
The backup remained.
D.M. cleanup.
We did not know whether D.M. meant Daniel Mercer.
Not officially.
Then the driver contacted Maya anonymously.
He did not confess.
He offered a trade.
Protection in exchange for information.
Maya refused to make promises she could not legally guarantee.
He disappeared again.
But before disappearing, he sent one file.
An audio message Daniel had left the night before the robbery.
The first recording established the plan.
The second file contained names.
At least one.
The driver’s.
Possibly another person involved.
Maya did not let me hear the complete recording.
“Why?”
“Because you are a witness, and I do not want your memory accused of being shaped by information recovered later.”
I hated her for three minutes.
Then I understood.
Daniel would challenge everything.
My injuries.
My voice.
My fear.
My recollection.
The evidence needed to stand without leaning on me.
We prepared the flash drive for court because Daniel’s attorney had demanded emergency disposition of marital funds.
Daniel believed I was too physically weakened to resist.
He planned to leave the hearing with control of the company accounts and temporary possession of the townhouse.
He offered me one hundred dollars in settlement consideration.
A symbolic cruelty.
Maya told me not to react.
“Men like Daniel mistake humiliation for leverage.”
I looked down at my orthopedic boot.
“What if he tries something?”
Maya placed the blue folder beneath my hand.
May you like
“Then we let the courtroom see who he is before the video even plays.”
