Chapter 9

Daniel was not immediately taken from the courtroom.
The deputies held him near the side wall while Judge Ruiz consulted with the court clerk and sheriff’s supervisor.
No one announced the complete charges.
No one resolved the divorce.
The courtroom simply changed jurisdiction in spirit before paperwork could catch up.
Daniel’s attorney requested a recess.
Judge Ruiz denied it.
Maya asked that the flash drive be taken into court custody and duplicated under forensic supervision.
Granted.
Daniel stared at the drive as though willing it to disappear.
Then he tried another strategy.
“Claire,” he said.
The deputies tightened their hold.
Judge Ruiz warned him not to address me.
He ignored her.
“You do not know what Maya has put on that device.”
I looked at him.
He softened his voice.
The same voice he used in the hospital.
The same voice he used before every lie meant to sound like concern.
“She is using you.”
Maya did not react.
I did.
Not emotionally.
Clearly.
“You held my hand while asking whether the drive was missing.”
His face tightened.
“That proves nothing.”
“You filed for divorce before the robbery.”
His attorney whispered, “Daniel, stop speaking.”
Daniel turned on him.
“You said the audio would never be admissible.”
The courtroom became silent again.
His attorney’s expression changed.
Maya slowly looked toward Judge Ruiz.
Daniel realized what he had said.
Not a confession.
Not complete.
But enough to create another question.
Why had his attorney discussed a specific audio recording before its introduction?
The judge ordered the clerk to preserve the courtroom recording.
Daniel’s attorney requested separate counsel.
The conspiracy widened without revealing itself.
I looked at the second file.
It named the driver.
But the driver was not the only person whose communications appeared in the metadata.
There were unknown numbers.
A private investigator.
A consultant attached to Daniel’s company.
Someone who had accessed my work schedule.
Someone who knew the exact night I would carry the encrypted drive.
Maya leaned toward me.
“Do not say more.”
I nodded.
The second file was leverage only while its full contents remained controlled.
Daniel finally understood that too.
His fear was no longer about the driver speaking.
May you like
It was about what the driver had preserved.
