Chapter 7

Daniel arrived at the courthouse smiling.
He shook hands with his attorney.
Nodded to the bailiff.
Held the courtroom door for an elderly woman.
Abusers often perform kindness best where witnesses can reward it.
He saw my throat brace and looked almost pleased.
Not openly.
Only in the way his shoulders relaxed.
He had expected me to recover more quickly.
My visible injuries helped him appear compassionate if he chose the right words.
Before the judge entered, he leaned toward me.
“You look terrible.”
Maya placed herself slightly between us.
“All communication through counsel.”
Daniel smiled at her.
“Of course.”
Then he looked at me.
“Still letting strangers make your decisions?”
Maya did not respond.
Neither did I.
Judge Ruiz entered.
The hearing began with financial arguments.
Daniel’s attorney claimed the business accounts were exclusively his.
The townhouse was company property.
The lake house had been purchased through a subsidiary.
My salary had been consumed by “personal instability and speculative investigations.”
Maya submitted contradictory records.
Daniel remained calm.
Then Judge Ruiz asked whether settlement remained possible.
Daniel requested permission to speak directly.
Maya objected.
The judge allowed one brief statement.
Daniel placed a folded hundred-dollar bill on the table.
The courtroom clerk stared.
“Take the hundred dollars and disappear.”
Above the table, his hand remained open.
Beneath it, his shoe found my injured foot.
The first pressure was light.
A warning.
I kept my face still.
Then he twisted harder.
Pain traveled through the fracture and up my leg.
My hand moved toward the blue folder.
Maya saw it.
Daniel thought I was surrendering.
Instead, I removed the flash drive.
His pressure increased.
I slid the evidence toward Judge Ruiz.
“Play the route history.”
The pain left my voice damaged but clear enough.
Daniel’s foot stopped moving.
The judge looked beneath the table.
Then back at him.
May you like
Something in her expression told me she had understood more than he realized.
