Chapter 4

Daniel became attentive after the robbery.
Too attentive.
He answered questions for me while my throat healed.
Told nurses I was confused from medication.
Told detectives I had been anxious for months.
Told friends I was traumatized and prone to misremembering details.
Every statement sounded protective.
Together, they built a version of me no one needed to trust.
The throat brace made speaking painful.
Daniel used that.
When Detective Samuel Harris visited the hospital, Daniel remained beside the bed.
I tried to describe the black SUV.
Daniel interrupted.
“She saw a dark vehicle.”
“Black,” I whispered.
He touched my shoulder.
“Claire, it was nighttime.”
I looked at him.
He smiled for the detective.
Later, when we were alone, I asked why he corrected me.
“You were sedated.”
“I know what I saw.”
“You think you do.”
“I heard them ask for the drive.”
His hand stopped adjusting my blanket.
“What drive?”
I watched his face.
He recovered quickly.
“What drive, Claire?”
“The one I never told you about.”
His eyes sharpened.
Then he laughed.
“You are testing me?”
“No.”
“You sound paranoid.”
The word arrived exactly when he needed it.
Paranoid.
Unstable.
Traumatized.
Daniel had already begun building the divorce case.
Two days later, he told me we needed space.
A week after that, his attorney filed first.
The petition described me as emotionally volatile and financially controlling.
It claimed I had hidden marital assets.
It accused me of fabricating suspicions about Daniel’s business.
The robbery appeared only once.
As evidence of my declining mental health after “an unfortunate street crime.”
Maya Chen read the filing in silence.
Then looked at me across her office.
“Your husband prepared this before the attack.”
“How do you know?”
“The petition references behavior from the week after the robbery, but the metadata shows the document draft was created twelve days before it.”
I felt cold.
Daniel had not reacted to the attack.
He had scheduled around it.
Maya closed the file.
“We stop treating this as divorce only.”
“What do we treat it as?”
She looked at my throat brace.
May you like
“A crime scene with marital paperwork around it.”
