Chapter 10 - the horse in the attic
State officers entered Caleb’s farmhouse through the rear door.
The alarm panel had been disabled with the correct code.
No one appeared downstairs.
Fresh mud led toward the attic staircase.
Grace found the stuffed horse inside an open storage trunk.
Its seam had been cut.
The cassette was gone.
A window at the far end of the attic stood open. Beneath it, tire tracks crossed the field toward a county road.
Caleb had returned for the recording.
He had known where to look.
Only Nora, Ruth, Daniel, Grace, Ethan, and Lucy had heard about the stuffed horse.
The conversation occurred inside Grace’s secured office.
No phones were allowed except official devices.
A hidden listening device was discovered beneath the conference table.
It had been placed there before Daniel’s family arrived.
Danner had visited the field office during a county coordination meeting weeks earlier. He admitted installing the device for Caleb.
Even after Danner’s arrest, the transmitter remained active.
Caleb had heard everything through a remote receiver.
Grace changed locations immediately and ordered a complete security sweep.
Ethan felt as though every room could betray them.
Lucy blamed herself.
“If I remembered sooner—”
“No,” Daniel said. “The adults had years to stop this before you ever needed to remember anything.”
He did not allow the child to carry the failure.
The search for Caleb expanded.
Grace believed he would try to destroy the cassette rather than keep it. Yet he might preserve it as leverage if it implicated someone else.
Daniel requested the original fire investigation.
Sarah died eleven years earlier inside the old equipment shed near the river fence. Daniel was away delivering cattle. Caleb claimed he saw smoke and tried to rescue her.
The fire marshal found a damaged electrical panel.
No accelerant was detected.
However, photographs showed the panel door had been opened before the fire. Someone had removed a protective fuse.
Rebecca’s suspected insurance payment came from Caleb’s business policy. He received $900,000 after equipment stored in the shed was destroyed.
Most of the equipment did not belong to him.
The false inventory carried Sarah’s electronic approval.
Daniel knew she would never have signed it.
Caleb likely used another copied signature.
The method had begun long before Rebecca’s death.
Grace found a witness listed in the old report.
A farm mechanic named Samuel Reed told investigators he saw Caleb near the shed that morning. He later withdrew the statement and left Nebraska.
Samuel was still alive.
He agreed to speak by secure video.
“Caleb paid me to say I confused the date,” he admitted. “He said Sarah caused the fire by entering after she saw smoke.”
“What did you actually see?” Grace asked.
“Caleb carrying a red fuel can from the shed.”
The original investigators tested only the main floor for accelerant. The roof collapsed before deeper samples were collected.
Samuel had remained silent because Caleb threatened his family and Danner—then a deputy—called the sighting unreliable.
Again, Danner had helped turn direct fear into a private dispute.
The evidence was significant but incomplete.
Rebecca’s cassette might contain her conversation with Caleb after the fire.
Nora remembered Rebecca telling her:
“He admitted he only meant to destroy the papers.”
If recorded, that sentence could prove Caleb caused Sarah’s death even if he claimed he never intended anyone to enter.
Ethan listened from the next room.
His mother’s death had shaped every year of his life.
Now he learned it may have resulted from the same greed that placed Lucy in the barn.
Daniel sat beside him.
“I should have looked harder.”
“You believed the fire report.”
“I wanted to.”
“Why?”
“Because the other possibility meant my brother knew Sarah was inside.”
Ethan understood the temptation.
A simple accident allowed the family to continue.
The truth required losing Caleb too.
A call interrupted them.
Caleb had contacted Grace directly.
He offered to surrender the cassette in exchange for safe passage out of Nebraska and dismissal of the kidnapping allegations.
Grace recorded the call.
“You are not negotiating charges involving two dead women and two children,” she said.
Caleb laughed softly.
“You don’t know what Rebecca recorded.”
“Then tell me.”
“She recorded Daniel.”
Ethan looked at his father.
Caleb continued.
“Sarah wasn’t alone in that shed. Daniel met her there before the fire.”
Daniel went still.
“That’s a lie.”
Caleb gave a location for the exchange: the abandoned river pumping station on Brooks land.
