Chapter 2 - the man in the driveway

Caleb crossed the yard without calling Daniel’s name.

That disturbed Ethan more than if his uncle had shouted.

Visitors approached through the front porch. Caleb walked directly toward the red barn, as though he already knew where to look.

Daniel pressed one finger to his lips.

Lucy crouched between the wall and the hay bales, trembling so violently that the dry stalks moved around her shoulders.

Ethan leaned close.

“Is he your father?”

“No.”

“Then who is he?”

“My stepfather.”

Caleb stopped outside the barn.

The wooden door shifted beneath his hand, but Daniel had secured the chain from inside.

“Daniel?” Caleb called. “Your truck’s in town, but I know you’re here.”

Daniel did not answer.

Caleb tried the door again.

“I’m looking for a little girl. Eight years old. Blond hair. Blue eyes. Her name is Lucy Hart.”

Ethan looked at the child beside him.

Caleb continued.

“She ran away after her mother died. She’s confused and frightened. The sheriff says she may be dangerous to herself.”

Lucy covered her mouth.

Ethan’s first instinct was to believe the calm adult outside rather than the terrified child hidden beside him.

Then he saw the bruises on her arm.

Daniel moved toward a narrow door built into the rear wall.

Ethan had never noticed it before. Hay sacks concealed its edges.

Daniel opened it and revealed a passage into an old livestock pen behind the barn.

“Go through there,” he whispered. “Stay below the fence line and run to the irrigation shed.”

“What about you?” Ethan asked.

“I’ll delay him.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You lied to me.”

“I know.”

“You kept a girl in our barn.”

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

Caleb struck the main door.

“Daniel, if you are hiding my stepdaughter, this becomes kidnapping.”

Lucy gripped Ethan’s sleeve.

“He killed Mom.”

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Ethan stared at her.

“What?”

“She was going to tell people what he did. He pushed her.”

Caleb hit the door again.

Daniel placed both hands on Ethan’s shoulders.

“Take Lucy to the irrigation shed. There’s a radio beneath the workbench. Use channel four and call Grace Nolan. Tell her Lucy is alive.”

“Who is Grace?”

“A state investigator.”

“Why didn’t you call the police?”

“Because Caleb reached them first.”

The barn door shuddered beneath another blow.

Daniel pushed Ethan toward the hidden passage.

“Go.”

Ethan crawled through first. Lucy followed, keeping her body low. They emerged behind the barn into tall grass bordering the cattle fence.

Rain clouds gathered in the western sky, turning the afternoon light gray.

They moved on hands and knees.

From inside the barn came the sound of splintering wood.

Caleb had forced the door.

Ethan reached the irrigation ditch and looked back.

Caleb stood in the broken entrance.

Daniel faced him in the center aisle.

“Where is she?” Caleb demanded.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Caleb looked toward the hidden bed.

“You have always been a terrible liar.”

He seized Daniel’s shirt.

Ethan almost stood.

Lucy pulled him down.

“If he sees us, he’ll hurt your dad too.”

They crawled toward the small metal shed near the cornfield.

Inside, the air smelled of oil and wet earth. Ethan found the radio beneath the workbench exactly where Daniel said it would be.

He turned the dial to channel four.

“This is Ethan Brooks. Can anyone hear me?”

Static answered.

He tried again.

“Grace Nolan, my dad said to call you. Lucy is alive.”

A woman’s voice broke through the static.

“Ethan, listen carefully. Is Daniel with you?”

“No. Uncle Caleb is at the barn.”

The channel went silent for two seconds.

Then Grace spoke with controlled urgency.

“Lock the shed. Do not return to the house. I’m fifteen minutes away.”

Lucy moved toward the small window.

A black pickup remained near the barn.

Daniel and Caleb were no longer visible.

Ethan asked, “Why would my uncle kill your mom?”

Lucy reached inside the collar of her dress and removed a small brass key hanging from a string.

“Because she found something under your barn.”

“What?”

“I don’t know. Mom told me if anything happened, I had to come here and find the door beneath the horse stall.”

The shed handle turned.

Both children froze.

Grace could not have arrived yet.

A man’s voice came from outside.

“Ethan? Your father sent me.”

It was not Caleb.

It was Sheriff Paul Danner.

Ethan started toward the door.

Lucy caught his arm.

May you like

“That’s the man who gave me back to Caleb the first time I ran.”

👉 The sheriff sounded like rescue, but Lucy’s warning suggested his badge might lead them directly back to the man hunting her.
