Chapter 8 - the sheriff’s second phone
Danner was arrested before noon.
His personal pickup was found behind an abandoned grain elevator. Caleb was gone, but mud and blood covered the passenger-side floor.
A torn piece of Caleb’s jacket remained caught on the seat belt.
Danner denied driving the vehicle.
He claimed Caleb stole it from behind the sheriff’s house.
A traffic camera showed Danner at the wheel thirty minutes after Caleb fled the farm.
The evidence ended that lie.
Grace found a second phone beneath Danner’s patrol-car seat.
It contained messages with Caleb.
Most concerned ordinary property disputes, missing-person reports, and Lucy’s custody status.
Then the tone changed.
Caleb wrote:
Daniel has the girl.
Danner answered:
I’ll bring her out if she’s there.
Caleb replied:
Do not let Grace reach the barn first.
Danner had not known every detail of Rebecca’s death or the forged deed.
He knew Caleb wanted Lucy returned quickly and without state involvement.
He accepted cash to delay reports, ignore Rebecca’s calls, and describe the matter as a private family conflict.
When Caleb fled, Danner helped him escape because exposure threatened his badge and pension.
Corruption had not begun as loyalty.
It began as convenience and money.
Danner gave investigators Caleb’s likely destination after learning the roadway footage existed.
An abandoned cattle-processing office near the Kansas border.
State police surrounded the building.
Caleb was not inside.
They found blood, food wrappers, and a laptop connected to a rural wireless network.
The computer contained draft messages to the development company.
Caleb planned to sell Rebecca’s share and pressure Daniel into signing by threatening to accuse him of kidnapping Lucy.
He had already prepared photographs of the hidden bed.
From the right angle, they made the barn look like a prison.
The food scraps, blankets, and locked door would support the accusation.
Daniel’s protective choice had created evidence Caleb could use.
Caleb wrote:
Daniel will lose custody of Ethan. I will become Lucy’s sole guardian. Both land shares become negotiable.
Ethan read only the age-appropriate summary, but he understood enough.
Caleb did not merely want Lucy returned.
He wanted both children removed from Daniel.
Grace recovered a video from the laptop.
It showed Caleb standing outside the barn two nights before Ethan broke the window.
Helen’s false voice message had already drawn her toward Nebraska.
Caleb followed her.
He watched her enter the barn and leave through the livestock passage.
Afterward, he approached the main door but did not enter.
Why?
Because Daniel’s truck returned.
Caleb waited for a moment when he could find Lucy and confront Daniel without state officers nearby.
The video ended with another person standing behind the camera.
A reflection appeared in Caleb’s truck window.
Small frame.
Light-colored jacket.
Face obscured.
Not Danner.
Grace asked the forensic team to isolate the image.
Helen looked at the reflection and became pale.
“I know that coat.”
It belonged to Rebecca.
Caleb had donated most of Rebecca’s clothing after her death, but Helen remembered the jacket from court meetings.
Lucy shook her head.
“My mom’s coat was in the hall closet.”
“After she died?” Grace asked.
“Yes. Caleb wouldn’t let me touch it.”
Someone had worn Rebecca’s boots into the barn and her jacket while filming Caleb.
Helen wore the boots.
She denied wearing the jacket.
The footage timestamp placed her inside the barn at the same time the camera operator stood outside.
Two separate people were using Rebecca’s belongings.
Grace searched Danner’s messages again.
One contact appeared only as R.
The final message read:
The children found the room. Move the remaining file before Grace does.
It was sent after Ethan broke the window.
The hidden room had already been searched.

Yet the sender believed another file remained.
👉 Caleb and Danner were no longer the only people protecting the secret beneath the barn.
