Grace traced the contact labeled R through cellular records.
The number belonged to a prepaid phone activated in Omaha. Most calls connected to Caleb or Danner.
One connected to a retirement home in Lincoln.
Daniel’s mother, Ruth Brooks, lived there.
Ethan had not seen his grandmother in nearly a year. Daniel said her memory had declined and long visits confused her.
Ruth answered Grace’s call clearly.
She knew Rebecca was dead.
She knew Lucy had disappeared.
She also knew the barn contained a hidden room.
“My husband built it,” Ruth said. “He kept records there when Caleb began borrowing against land that wasn’t his.”
Daniel stared at the phone.
“You knew Caleb forged documents?”
“I suspected.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You always believed family problems could be solved privately.”
The criticism landed because Daniel had repeated the same mistake with Lucy.
Ruth denied owning the prepaid phone.
Grace sent an agent to the retirement home.
The device was found inside a visitor locker, wrapped in Rebecca’s light-colored jacket.
Security footage showed a woman entering the building three times.

Lucy barely remembered her.
Nora was located in a small rented house outside Lincoln.
She wore Rebecca’s jacket when officers arrived.
She surrendered the prepaid phone.
“I was trying to protect Lucy.”
Grace’s expression remained hard.
“You drew Helen back with a false recording.”
“I needed her to retrieve the evidence.”
“You alerted Caleb.”
“I did not.”
“You sent messages to Danner.”
“I believed he could remove Lucy legally once Daniel hid her.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You told the sheriff where she was?”
“I told him to check your farm.”
Lucy recoiled.
Nora had not known Danner was taking Caleb’s money. She believed Daniel’s decision to hide Lucy in the barn would destroy the murder case and traumatize the child further.
Instead of contacting Grace directly, Nora tried to manipulate everyone into exposing the truth.
She copied Lucy’s voice from an old birthday video.
She sent the false message to Helen.
She informed Danner that Daniel might be hiding Lucy.
She filmed Caleb watching the barn, hoping to prove he was stalking the farm.
Each secret move increased the danger.
“You could have called me,” Grace said.
“I called your office twice.”
“You refused to give your name.”
“I didn’t trust anyone.”
That was the phrase every adult in the case used.
Daniel did not trust the local police.
Helen did not trust the courts.
Nora did not trust Grace.
Danner claimed he did not trust Rebecca’s fear.
Caleb exploited every isolated decision.
Grace asked about the message concerning “the remaining file.”
Nora looked toward Ruth.
“Rebecca made two recordings.”
The cassette found beneath the barn described the forged deed and Caleb’s threats.
The second recording documented the night of a fire on Brooks Farm eleven years earlier.
Ethan was not yet born.
Daniel’s wife, Sarah, died in that fire.
Ethan had been told an electrical fault started it.
Ruth closed her eyes.
“Rebecca believed Caleb caused it.”
Daniel stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.
“No.”
Nora continued.
“Sarah found out Caleb had taken a loan against the river acreage. She planned to tell you. The records were stored in the old equipment shed.”
The shed burned.
Sarah went inside to retrieve them and never came out.
No one proved arson.
Rebecca later discovered an insurance payment connected to Caleb’s debt.
She recorded her suspicion but hid the file because she feared destroying the family without stronger evidence.
“Where is it?” Daniel asked.
Nora looked at Lucy.
“Rebecca gave the second cassette to her.”
Lucy stared back.
“I don’t have it.”
“She put it inside something you always carried.”
Lucy’s hand moved toward her neck.
The brass key remained there, but nothing else.
Then she remembered a stuffed horse Caleb threw away after Rebecca’s funeral.
Lucy had rescued it from the trash and hidden it before running.
“Where?” Grace asked.
“In the farmhouse attic.”
Caleb’s farmhouse was now sealed as a crime scene.
The recording might still be there.
Before officers could leave, Grace’s phone rang.
The farmhouse security alarm had just activated.
