Grace located Helen Price at a roadside motel outside Kearney.

She did not resist arrest because no arrest warrant existed.

She asked for protection.

Helen appeared exhausted and frightened. Her hair had been cut short, and a healing scar ran along her jaw.

She admitted entering the Brooks barn.

“I used Rebecca’s boots because I knew Caleb would trace my own shoes if he found the room disturbed.”

“Why remove the blue grain sack?” Grace asked.

“To keep it away from him.”

“You placed it in a storage unit he controlled.”

“He did not control it when I rented it.”

The unit had originally been opened by Rebecca using Helen’s help. After Rebecca died, Caleb discovered the account through estate records and changed the access information.

Helen did not know until she returned two nights earlier.

Caleb arrived before she could.

Grace asked why Helen vanished after Rebecca’s death.

Helen finally contacted Rebecca through a secure voice-mail system they had arranged. The tape in the barn was created from Rebecca’s final message, not recorded live underground as Daniel assumed.

Helen placed it there after Rebecca died.

The background whisper belonged to Helen herself, added while organizing the evidence.

She had not caused Rebecca’s death.

Grace asked why she returned now.

“Lucy called my old emergency number.”

Lucy denied making any call.
