Chapter 6 - the signature at caleb’s table

Daniel did not deny visiting Caleb after Rebecca’s death.

He studied the photograph under the field-office light and sat heavily in the nearest chair.

“That was the insurance release.”

“Did you read it?” Ethan asked.

Daniel’s silence answered first.

Caleb had called him three days after Rebecca’s funeral. He claimed the family insurance company needed signatures from every property beneficiary before paying Lucy’s immediate expenses.

Daniel was grieving and angry. He wanted the child provided for without another argument.

Caleb placed four signature pages in front of him.

“I read the first two,” Daniel admitted. “The last pages looked the same.”

Grace examined the photograph.

The paper visible beneath Daniel’s hand contained only the lower signature block. The heading had been covered by another document.

“You signed incomplete pages,” she said.

“Yes.”

Ethan stared at his father.

“You always tell me to read things.”

“I know.”

“Did you sign the fake deed?”

“I don’t know.”

The answer frightened him more than denial.

Grace sent the photograph and known documents to a forensic examiner. Until results returned, they needed the storage unit.

A judge approved a warrant before dawn.

Grace took Daniel with her because he could identify family records. Ethan and Lucy remained at the office with another investigator.

Ethan hated waiting.

By nine, Grace called.

The Grand Island storage unit contained household furniture, old farm tools, and six sealed grain sacks.

Five were white.

One was blue.

Inside the blue sack were Rebecca’s original documents.

The forged deed.

Caleb’s debt records.

Bank statements showing payments from the development company.

A draft guardianship petition describing Lucy as emotionally unstable.

There was also a partial set of Daniel’s signature pages.

Forensic analysis showed his signature had been transferred onto the false deed through a digital scan. He had not signed the deed itself.

The photograph at Caleb’s table documented how Caleb obtained a clean sample.

Daniel’s carelessness gave him the tool.

Caleb created the fraud.

Both facts remained true.

Grace found something else inside the unit.

A pair of dark brown work boots with mud dried along one side.

Size seven.

The tread matched the fresh prints beneath the barn.

The boots belonged to Rebecca.

Caleb had kept them after her death.

But Rebecca could not have entered the hidden room last week.

Someone wore her boots.

A security camera at the storage facility captured a hooded figure accessing the unit two nights earlier. The person removed the boots, then returned them several hours later.

The face was hidden.

The entry code used belonged to Caleb.

Grace requested roadway cameras and fuel-station footage from the route between Grand Island and the farm.

While investigators worked, Lucy asked to see the original recording from her mother.

Grace played it again.

This time, Ethan noticed a faint sound behind Rebecca’s voice.

Three short metallic knocks.

A pause.

Then two more.

The same pattern repeated twice.

Daniel recognized it.

“My father used that signal in the barn during storms. Three, then two. It meant someone was beneath the floor.”

Rebecca had not been alone in the hidden room while recording.

Someone else was there.

Grace enhanced the final seconds.

After Rebecca stopped speaking, another voice whispered:

“I’ll keep the originals away from Caleb.”

A woman’s voice.

Daniel looked shaken.

He knew it.

“Who is she?” Grace asked.

“My sister-in-law’s attorney. Helen Price.”

Helen Price had handled Rebecca’s estate before abruptly resigning after the funeral. She told the court she had a medical emergency and moved out of Nebraska.

Her address had been unknown for eight months.

Yet fuel-station footage showed a woman resembling Helen buying gasoline thirty miles from the Brooks farm two days earlier.

She wore Rebecca’s brown boots.

👉 The person entering the barn may have been the lawyer who vanished after Rebecca’s death—and she had returned just before Caleb found Lucy.
