Chapter 2

Claire had not wanted to attend the dinner.

Her doctor had told her to avoid stress.

Her best friend had told her to stop answering Daniel’s messages.

Her attorney had told her never to meet the Whitmores without a witness.

But Daniel had used the one word he knew still reached her.

Baby.

“We need to discuss support arrangements before the baby comes,” he said over the phone. “No lawyers. No drama. Just adults.”

Claire knew better.

Daniel never wanted adults.

He wanted an audience.

The private residence in San Diego belonged to Eleanor, though she introduced it as “the family house” whenever she wanted people to remember wealth before kindness.

When Claire arrived, the dining room was already arranged like a trial.

Eleanor at one end.

Daniel beside Vanessa.

A place for Claire facing all three.

Crystal glasses.

Candles.

Flowers.

No comfort.

Only presentation.

Claire was eight months pregnant, tired, and swollen from a long day of meetings she had not told them about.

Daniel looked at her stomach before he looked at her face.

“Still dramatic with the maternity fashion, I see.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

Eleanor smiled.

Claire sat down.

She had learned that silence made cruel people louder.

And tonight, she needed them loud.

Because inside her phone was an open compliance line.

Inside Argent Holdings, a confidential investigation had already begun.

And Daniel, Vanessa, and Eleanor had no idea that every insult, every threat, every careless sentence could become part of something much larger than a family dinner.
