Chapter 4

Eleanor had planned the bucket.

Claire understood that from the way it sat near the sideboard before dinner began.

Too visible to be random.

Too close to Eleanor’s chair.

Too full of ice for any normal household use.

At first, Claire thought it was meant as a threat.

A prop.

Something Eleanor could touch while saying, You are no longer welcome in this family.

Then Daniel made his first mistake.

He slid a document across the table.

Not child support.

Not medical expenses.

A corporate consent form.

Claire looked at it.

“What is this?”

Daniel smiled.

“Just a clarification of your limited involvement with Argent.”

Claire did not touch the paper.

“I’m not signing that.”

Vanessa leaned forward.

“It’s embarrassing that you still cling to a company Daniel runs.”

Claire looked at her.

“Daniel does not run Argent.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

Eleanor lifted her glass.

“Claire, pregnancy has made you confused about your place.”

There was that word again.

Place.

Claire folded her hands over her belly.

“My place is not the issue tonight.”

That was when Eleanor stood.

Daniel did not stop her.

Vanessa smiled before the bucket moved.

The ice water crashed over Claire in one cold, filthy wave.

For a second, Claire could not breathe.

Then the baby shifted beneath her hands.

Alive.

Startled.

Safe.

Her fear sharpened into something absolute.

Eleanor lowered the bucket.

“At least you finally took a bath.”

Daniel laughed.

And Claire realized the audit would not simply uncover numbers.
