Chapter 8

The investigators began collecting information without touching more than necessary.

One photographed the wet table.

Another documented the phones from a distance.

A third noted the presence of the corporate consent form Daniel had slid toward Claire before the bucket.

Daniel noticed and lunged for the paper.

Marcus’s voice cut through the room.

“Do not touch that.”

Daniel stopped.

Barely.

His hand hovered over the table.

Water dripped from the floral centerpiece onto the dark wood.

Claire watched the paper soak slowly at the corner.

The symbolism was almost too obvious.

A document meant to erase her authority now lying beside the evidence of why that authority mattered.

Vanessa looked at the form.

“What is that?”

Daniel snapped, “Nothing.”

Claire said, “It was the paper he wanted me to sign before your mother-in-law poured water on me.”

Eleanor corrected automatically, “Former mother-in-law.”

Claire looked at her.

“Yes. Thankfully.”

Vanessa’s face tightened with embarrassment, but also fear.

“Daniel, what did the paper do?”

He did not answer.

Marcus did.

“It appears to relate to governance authority under review.”

Vanessa took another step away.

Daniel turned on Marcus.

“You have no right to discuss internal matters in front of her.”

“She is part of the review,” Marcus said.

Vanessa stared at Daniel.

The blush satin dress that had looked elegant moments ago now made her appear strangely exposed.

She had laughed while holding a wineglass.

Now her own phone lay on the table like evidence.

Claire’s dress was soaked.

Her body was cold.

But the room had finally stopped treating her as the vulnerable one.
