Chapter 6

Daniel tried to recover through arrogance.

It was his favorite tool.

“This is absurd,” he said. “Claire is emotional. She is humiliated, and now she is abusing corporate procedure.”

Marcus looked at Claire’s soaked dress.

Then at the empty metal bucket beside Eleanor.

Then at the overturned glassware and water across the table.

His expression did not change, but his voice grew colder.

“Preserve every device.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Preserve?”

Eleanor’s hand moved toward her handbag.

One investigator stepped forward.

“Please do not touch the phone inside the bag.”

Eleanor froze.

The command was polite.

That made it worse.

Daniel turned sharply toward Claire.

“You planned this.”

Claire finally spoke.

“No. I prepared for it.”

The difference mattered.

Planning would mean she created the cruelty.

Preparation meant she had survived enough to expect it.

Marcus placed the sealed black folder on the dry edge of the table, away from the spilled water.

He did not open it.

He did not reveal every document.

He did not announce firings, seizures, arrests, or punishments.

He only said, “Your access is suspended pending investigation.”

Daniel’s face flushed.

“My access?”

“Yours. Ms. Cole’s. Mrs. Whitmore’s.”

Vanessa whispered, “Why mine?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Because your credentials were used in transactions now under review.”

Daniel’s eyes snapped toward her.

Vanessa stepped back from him.

That was the first visible crack between them.

Not guilt.

Self-preservation.

Claire saw it and felt no satisfaction.

Only confirmation.
