Chapter 9

Claire stood slowly.
The chair scraped softly against the floor.
Daniel watched her as if expecting weakness to return once she moved.
It did not.
She supported the underside of her belly with one hand and picked up her phone with the other. Her hair dripped onto her shoulders. The ivory maternity dress clung heavily to her body.
She looked humiliated.
She also looked in control.
That contradiction frightened Daniel.
“Claire,” he said, lowering his voice, “think carefully. This affects the baby.”
Her eyes hardened.
“Do not use my child as cover.”
The room went silent.
Even Eleanor looked down.
Daniel’s mouth opened.
Closed.
Marcus Reed stepped beside Claire, not in front of her. That mattered. He did not rescue her from speaking. He supported the process she had triggered.
“Ms. Mercer,” he said, “do you confirm the audit should proceed?”
Claire looked at Daniel.
At Vanessa.
At Eleanor.
At the bucket.
At the phones still lighting up with calls they were afraid to answer.
Then she looked down at her stomach.
The baby shifted again, slower this time.
“I confirm.”
Daniel exhaled sharply.
Eleanor whispered, “You vindictive girl.”
Claire turned toward her.
“No. I gave you every chance to stay out of my work.”
Eleanor’s face tightened.
Claire continued.
“You chose the bucket.”
No one laughed this time.
Marcus closed the black folder and addressed the three of them again.
“Preserve every device. Your access is suspended pending investigation.”
The sentence was not punishment yet.
It was worse for them.

It was the beginning of discovery.
