Chapter 4

I had never called my dad while crying like that before.
Not since Mom died.
Dad was the person I tried to protect from my sadness.
That sounds backwards, but grief rearranges families in strange ways.
After Mom’s funeral, I noticed how tired he looked when he thought I was not watching.
So I became easier.
Good grades.
No trouble.
No expensive requests.
No crying unless the door was locked.
Dad used to say, “Emma, you don’t have to be okay for me.”
I always nodded.
Then kept pretending anyway.
But standing on that porch with my trash bag at my feet and Cody holding my laptop inside, I could not pretend.
The call connected.
“Emma?”
I heard traffic behind him.
He was probably leaving a meeting.
“Dad…”
“What happened?”
“Grandpa threw me out.”
His breath changed.
“Where are you?”
“On the porch.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Is the door open?”
“Partly.”
“Who is there?”
“Grandpa. Aunt Denise. Cody.”
A pause.
“Where is your laptop?”
I looked through the gap in the door.
Cody was still holding it.
“Cody has it.”
Another pause.
This one colder.
Then Dad asked, “Is your phone on speaker?”
“No.”
“Put it on speaker.”
My fingers shook as I tapped the screen.
The phone was nearly dead.
Dad’s voice came out small but clear.
“Richard.”
Grandpa stiffened.
“Daniel, your daughter is being disrespectful.”
Dad did not raise his voice.
“Put her back inside. You have thirty minutes.”
Grandpa laughed once.
“You do not give orders in my house.”
Then his phone buzzed.
He pulled it out.
His face changed before he finished reading.
Denise stepped closer.
“What is it?”
Grandpa did not answer.
Cody lowered my laptop slowly.
Dad’s voice came through again.
“I sent it to all three of you.”
Denise pulled out her phone.
Then Cody.
Whatever they saw made the hallway go silent.

I stood in the cold, watching through the open door as the people who had thrown me out suddenly looked trapped inside.
