Chapter 9

The next four hours were the longest of my life.
No one yelled.
That almost made it worse.
Yelling would have given the fear shape.
Instead, the house became quiet and watchful.
I sat in the living room near the front window with my laptop on my knees and my dead phone charging beside me.
Cody stayed on the stairs.
Denise paced between the kitchen and hallway.
Grandpa sat in his chair, pretending to read the same page of a magazine for forty minutes.
The trash bag remained outside.
At one point, snow began falling lightly.
I watched flakes land on the black plastic and melt.
My clothes were inside it.
My favorite hoodie.
My jeans.
A sweater Mom had bought me before she died.
No one brought it in.
That told me they still believed the bag belonged out there.
Maybe part of me did too.
At 4:17 p.m., my phone charged enough to turn on.
Messages appeared from Dad.
Stay visible.
Do not go upstairs.
Rebecca is on the call chain.
I froze at the name.
Rebecca Shaw was Dad’s attorney.
I had met her twice.
She was calm in a way that made adults sit straighter.
Another message arrived.
If Richard says this is about guardianship, do not respond.
Guardianship.
The word made my stomach turn.
I looked up.
Grandpa was watching me.
Not like a grandfather.
Like someone waiting to see what I understood.
Denise came into the living room.
“Emma,” she said softly.
Too softly.
“Your father is very emotional right now.”
I said nothing.
“He doesn’t always make practical decisions when it comes to you.”
Still nothing.
“Cody needs stability too.”
I held the laptop closer.
She stepped toward me.
“We were only trying to make the house work for everyone.”
My phone buzzed again.
A message from Dad.
Do not engage.
So I did not.
Denise’s mouth tightened.
The front door opened at 5:03 p.m.
Cold air rushed in.
Dad stepped inside wearing his gray overcoat, face pale from the drive, eyes fixed on me.
I stood.
For one second, I was sixteen.
Then I was five.
May you like
Then I was every age I had ever been when I needed him.
