Chapter 5

I did not know what Dad’s message said until later.
At that moment, I only saw the effect.
Grandpa Richard’s hand trembled.
Aunt Denise’s mouth opened, but no words came.
Cody looked at the laptop like it had turned dangerous.
“Dad?” I whispered.
“I’m here,” he said through the phone.
“Don’t hang up.”
“I won’t.”
Inside, Grandpa tried to recover.
“You are overreacting.”
Dad’s voice remained calm.
“You put my sixteen-year-old daughter outside in winter.”
“She was insolent.”
“You gave her room to Cody.”
“It is my house.”
Another silence.
Then Dad said, “Read the first line again.”
Grandpa looked down at his phone.
His jaw tightened.
Denise whispered, “Richard…”
Dad continued.
“That house is held in the Mercer Family Residence Trust.”
I blinked.
I knew Dad paid for the house.
I did not know about a trust.
Grandpa did.
That was clear from his face.
Dad said, “You have occupancy rights under conditions.”
Denise snapped, “Daniel, don’t do this.”
Dad finally sounded angry.
But still quiet.
“Denise, you pushed my daughter’s clothes onto the porch.”
“She has a phone.”
“She is sixteen.”
“She was not going to freeze.”
I flinched.
That sentence told me exactly how long Aunt Denise had watched me standing there.
Long enough to decide the cold counted only if I stopped surviving it.
Dad said, “Emma, pick up your bag.”
I reached for the trash bag.
“No,” he said. “Not to leave.”
My hand froze.
“Stand where they can see you.”
I did.
My cheeks were wet.
My sneakers were on the cold porch boards.
My backpack strap dug into my shoulder.
Dad spoke again.
“Richard, Denise, Cody. Look at her.”
No one wanted to.
Dad waited.
That was the worst part.
He made them do it.
Grandpa’s eyes shifted to me.
Denise looked for half a second, then away.
Cody stared at the floor.
Dad said, “That is the person you tried to remove from the home I built to protect her.”
The word protect landed harder than any threat.
