Chapter 7

No one opened the door wider.

Not at first.

That was the strangest part.

They had been ordered.

Warned.

Exposed.

Still, pride kept them frozen for several seconds too long.

Then Cody moved.

He did not give me the laptop.

He placed it on the entry table like touching my hand might admit too much.

Denise hissed, “Cody.”

He stepped back.

“I’m not getting in trouble for this.”

That sentence told me everything about him.

He did not care that I was hurt.

He cared that consequences had become possible.

Grandpa Richard finally pushed the door open.

The warm air came out around me.

I did not step inside.

Not yet.

I looked down at my trash bag.

Then at my grandfather.

He said, “Come in.”

No apology.

No Emma.

No I was wrong.

Just come in.

Like I had been standing outside by choice.

Dad heard it too.

“Richard.”

Grandpa closed his eyes.

Then forced the words out.

“Emma, come inside.”

I still did not move.

Denise snapped, “What does she want now?”

Dad said, “Her room.”

Denise’s face twisted.

“Cody needs space.”

Dad’s answer came instantly.

“Cody can use the guest room.”

“That room is small.”

“So was the porch.”

Silence.

Neil—no, not Neil.

There was no Neil here.

There was only my father’s voice on a dying phone, holding the entire house still.

My battery dropped to one percent.

I panicked.

“Dad, my phone’s dying.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because I can hear the warning beep.”

I almost smiled.

Almost.

He said, “Listen to me. Walk inside. Pick up your laptop. Go to the living room where there are windows. Stay on the call as long as it lasts.”

“What if it dies?”

“Then you go to the neighbor’s house if anyone blocks you again.”

Grandpa stiffened.

Dad continued.

“And Richard knows exactly what happens if you have to do that.”

This time, when I stepped inside, no one touched me.

No one spoke.

The trash bag stayed on the porch.

I left it there on purpose.
