Chapter 6

The thirty minutes mattered.

Dad did not pick that number randomly.

That was what I learned later.

The trust had an emergency safety clause.

If anyone living in the house endangered me, denied me access, removed my belongings, or attempted to dispossess me while Dad was away, he could suspend household funding, occupancy permissions, and access privileges pending review.

He had written it after Mom died.

Not because he expected Grandpa to throw me out.

Because Mom had made him promise not to confuse relatives with safe people.

I did not know that either.

There was so much I did not know because Dad had been carrying quiet protections around me like invisible walls.

Grandpa did know.

He had signed the occupancy agreement.

So had Denise when she moved in.

Cody had not signed anything, but Denise had signed for him.

They had all known the house came with rules.

They had counted on Dad loving them too much to enforce those rules.

That was their mistake.

Dad told Grandpa, “Emma goes inside now.”

Grandpa swallowed.

“What if I refuse?”

“Then the next message goes to the trustee, the utility administrator, the school resource officer, and my attorney.”

Denise grabbed Grandpa’s arm.

“Richard.”

Cody whispered, “Mom, what does that mean?”

She did not answer.

Dad did.

“It means the locks, cards, accounts, vehicle access, tuition transfers, and residence permissions all get reviewed tonight.”

Cody looked at the laptop again.

“My school stuff is on here.”

I almost laughed from disbelief.

My laptop.

His concern.

His school stuff.

Dad said, “That laptop belongs to Emma.”

Cody’s face flushed.

“I was just borrowing it.”

“No.”

“You were holding stolen property while she stood outside.”

Cody looked at Denise.

She looked panicked now.

Not sorry.

Panicked.

Grandpa forced a laugh.

“This is insane. You would destroy your own family over teenage drama?”

I heard Dad inhale.

When he spoke again, his voice had changed.

“Emma is my family.”

The words hit me so hard I had to grip the porch railing.

Not because I did not know he loved me.

Because love spoken clearly in front of people trying to erase you feels like being pulled back from the edge of a cliff.
