Chapter 8

The living room felt different after I came back in.

It was the same room.

Same windows.

Same old rug.

Same framed photographs Grandpa liked to display when relatives visited.

But now I could see the arrangement underneath.

Grandpa in the center.

Denise beside him.

Cody taking what he wanted.

Me expected to stay grateful for whatever space remained.

I picked up my laptop from the entry table.

Cody muttered, “I didn’t break it.”

I looked at him.

“That’s not the point.”

He rolled his eyes, but less confidently.

My phone blinked red.

Dad’s voice came through again.

“Emma, are you inside?”

“Yes.”

“Laptop?”

“Yes.”

“Backpack?”

“Yes.”

“Where are they?”

“Standing by the stairs.”

“Good.”

Grandpa said, “Daniel, you have made your point.”

Dad replied, “No. Emma has.”

Denise folded her arms.

“You’re teaching her to disrespect elders.”

Dad said, “No.”

“I’m teaching her that age does not turn cruelty into authority.”

Denise’s face went white.

Grandpa started to speak, but Dad cut him off.

“I will be there in four hours.”

My heart jumped.

“You’re coming home?”

“Yes.”

“You have the Cincinnati meeting.”

“It ended.”

Because of me.

The thought made guilt rise fast.

Dad knew.

“Emma, listen carefully. You did not cause this.”

I bit my lip.

He continued, “They did.”

My phone beeped again.

The screen darkened.

“Dad—”

“If it dies, charge it in the living room. Do not go upstairs alone. Do not argue. Do not hand anyone your laptop. Do not sign anything. Do you understand?”

Sign anything?

My eyes moved to Grandpa.

He looked away.

That one movement told me there was more.

“Yes,” I whispered.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

The phone died.

The silence after the call felt enormous.

Grandpa put his phone into his pocket slowly.

Denise looked at him.

“What did Daniel send besides the trust notice?”

Grandpa did not answer.

Cody looked between them.

I held my laptop tighter.
