Chapter 12 - THE SECOND SARAHSarah had an older sister named Rachel.
The family said Rachel died in a drowning accident when both girls were teenagers.
No body was recovered.
Their parents discouraged Sarah from discussing her. Michael later claimed the tragedy explained Sarah’s anxiety and memory gaps.
Rebecca’s files told another story.
Rachel survived.
Charles recruited her into the youth-sports foundation as an identity substitute. Because the sisters strongly resembled each other, Rachel could sign documents, access accounts, and appear in meetings as Sarah.
Michael married Sarah partly because Charles already controlled her sister.
The woman meeting Rebecca on Mercer Island may have been Rachel.
Sarah stared at the photographs.
“I thought she drowned.”
“Who told you?” Detective Cole asked.
“My father.”
Sarah’s father had served as Charles’s company attorney.
He arranged Rachel’s false death after she witnessed the early helmet experiments.
Instead of exposing the company, he allowed Charles to hide one daughter and later married the other into the Mercer family.
The alliance ensured both families remained silent.
Michael claimed he never knew Rachel existed.
Tyler’s videos contradicted him.
One recording showed Michael arguing with a woman who looked like Sarah inside the stadium.
“You were supposed to keep Rebecca calm,” he said.
The woman answered:
“I am not your wife.”
Rachel.
She had been maintaining Rebecca’s confinement while pretending to help her escape.
The real Sarah’s contact with Rebecca may have been limited.
Some meetings, calls, and agreements attributed to Sarah belonged to her sister.
Daniel reopened the video of Sarah beside the hatch.
Her clothing matched Sarah’s.
Her wedding ring did not.
The woman who handed Emily the key was Rachel.
Sarah had still seen Michael test the hatch and negotiated about Emily’s survival. She remained responsible for her own conduct.
But she had not sent Emily toward the compartment.
Rachel had.
“Why would she risk Emily?” Daniel asked.
Rebecca answered through a newly recovered message.
“Rachel believed the trust transfer would finally free her from Charles.”
If Daniel lost control and Michael became Emily’s guardian, Rachel planned to expose Michael and seize the trust through Sarah’s legal identity.
She did not care which child was injured as long as the Mercer structure collapsed.
Sarah looked toward Mason.
“My sister used my sons.”
Michael gave a bitter laugh from the interview room.
“You used them first.”
Neither statement canceled the other.
Police traced Rachel’s movements toward the abandoned stadium.
The building’s server activated again.
This time, a live video showed Rachel standing beside Charles Mercer.
Charles looked older and thinner than his funeral photographs but unmistakably alive.
Rachel held Rebecca by the arm.
Michael watched from police custody.
“Dad.”
Charles smiled toward the camera.
“Michael, you protected Tyler exactly as I trained you.”
Tyler turned away from the screen.
Charles addressed Daniel next.
“You protected Emily exactly as Rebecca predicted.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Release them.”
“I am not holding Rachel.”
Rachel released Rebecca’s arm to prove it.
They were partners.
Rebecca looked toward Rachel with disbelief.
“You said Charles threatened Sarah.”
“He did.”
“And Mason?”
“Necessary pressure.”
Rebecca recoiled.
The woman who helped her escape had been guiding her toward another version of the same system.
Charles raised a folder.
The original settlement ledger was inside.
“Every recording, trust clause, and injury leads here.”
He looked toward Emily’s hospital camera.
“But the ledger does not belong to the Mercer family.”
The cover opened.
The first beneficiary’s name appeared.
EMILY REBECCA COLE.
Daniel frowned.
Emily’s surname was Mercer.
Rebecca’s maiden name was Cole.
The trust listed Daniel not as father, but as court-recognized guardian.
Charles said:

“Daniel, did Rebecca ever show you the fertility records?”
👉 Charles claimed Daniel was not Emily’s biological father, threatening the legal bond Michael had been trying to destroy.
