Chapter 5 - THE CABIN ON LAKE UNIONPolice traced Sarah’s call to a rental cabin beside Lake Union.

By the time officers arrived, the front door had been forced open.

A chair lay overturned.

Sarah’s phone rested beneath the table with its screen shattered.

Mason was gone.

So was the memory card.

There was no blood or evidence of serious physical injury, but tire marks showed two vehicles leaving within minutes of each other.

One belonged to Michael’s company.

The second belonged to Sarah.

Detective Cole examined a notebook found inside the kitchen.

Sarah had been planning her escape for months. She documented Michael’s finances, Tyler’s assaults, Mason’s unexplained bruises, and repeated Sunday calls from an unidentified man.

She also recorded her own failures.

I told Tyler to remain calm after he pushed Mason because I feared Michael would escalate.

I hid the first video instead of reporting it.

I believed gathering enough evidence would protect the children later.

Each delay taught Michael that I would tolerate one more incident.

Sarah had understood what she was doing.

That did not stop her.

A map inside the notebook marked three properties.

The Mercer family home.

The pool house.

And an abandoned athletic-recovery clinic outside Tacoma.

Police drove toward the clinic.

Daniel remained at the hospital because Emily had developed swelling near the repaired tendons. Leaving her while another child was missing felt impossible.

He called Tyler instead.

“Where would your father take Mason?”

“I don’t know.”

“You recorded him for years.”

Tyler looked toward his juvenile advocate.

“The old clinic.”

“Why?”

“That’s where Grandpa lives.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

“You’ve seen him?”

“Once.”

Michael took Tyler there after a championship game and introduced Charles as a former coach named Mr. Ward.

Charles praised Tyler’s aggression and promised he would be “the Mercer boy who restored the name.”

“What did he say about Mason?”

“That Mason was soft.”

“And Emily?”

Tyler’s eyes dropped.

“He called her Rebecca’s insurance.”

Daniel asked what that meant.

Tyler did not know.

The answer waited on Rebecca’s memory card.

Police recovered a backup from Sarah’s laptop cloud account. The video continued after Rebecca’s statement.

She explained that Charles had an affair with her mother decades earlier. Rebecca was his biological daughter, though she had been raised under another surname.

That made Daniel and Rebecca half-siblings.

Daniel nearly dropped the tablet.

Rebecca had discovered the truth after their marriage and after Emily’s birth.

She planned to tell Daniel, but Charles threatened to expose the relationship publicly in a way that would destroy Emily’s identity and invalidate parts of the family trust.

The horror was not that Daniel and Rebecca knowingly entered a forbidden relationship.

They had been deliberately kept ignorant by the man connecting them.

Charles encouraged their first meeting.

He sponsored the internship where Rebecca met Daniel.

He wanted Rebecca close because her mother had hidden copies of the old settlement ledger.

Their marriage gave Charles access to everything she inherited.

Rebecca’s recording continued:

“Emily’s trust is not merely money. Charles placed company control inside it because her DNA connects both Mercer branches.”

Emily would inherit voting authority at fourteen.

If Daniel lost guardianship before then, Michael could apply to manage the shares as her nearest eligible uncle.

That was why he needed Daniel portrayed as violent.

Why the incident statement had been prepared.

Why Emily’s hand had been targeted.

Rebecca held up another document.

“If anything happens to me, Sarah has the second copy.”

Daniel looked toward Detective Cole.

Sarah had never mentioned it.

At the Tacoma clinic, officers entered through a side loading door.

The building appeared abandoned, but the basement medical wing remained powered.

Mason’s jacket lay beside a treatment bed.

A camera showed Michael dragging Sarah down a corridor while Mason followed willingly.

The child was not fleeing Michael.

He was carrying Tyler’s phone toward him.

Before the feed ended, Mason looked directly into the camera and tapped his smartwatch twice.

Daniel’s phone vibrated.

A live location appeared.

Mason had activated a tracker inside the memory card.

It was moving toward the Mercer family cemetery.

👉 Mason appeared to surrender the evidence, but he had secretly turned it into a beacon leading police toward the family’s empty grave.
