Chapter 6 - THE COFFIN WITHOUT A BODYCharles Mercer’s grave stood beneath an oak tree at the far end of the cemetery.

The headstone showed a loving father, respected businessman, and generous supporter of youth athletics.
Police surrounded the family mausoleum before opening it.
The coffin inside was empty.
A wireless transmitter had been taped beneath the lining. Mason’s tracking signal came from it, but the child was nowhere nearby.
Michael had discovered the beacon and planted it inside his father’s false grave.
He wanted police wasting time while he moved Sarah and Mason elsewhere.
Yet the empty coffin proved Charles’s death had been staged.
Detective Cole obtained an emergency warrant for the abandoned clinic’s records.
The underground rooms contained physical-rehabilitation equipment, blood-testing supplies, football impact sensors, and cameras positioned around padded training spaces.
Videos showed teenagers wearing experimental helmets while adults triggered controlled collisions.
Tyler appeared in several recent recordings.
Michael stood beside him.
Charles watched from behind the observation glass.
The defective helmet scandal had never truly ended.
The family continued testing improved designs on young athletes without disclosing the risks.
Tyler was their most valuable subject because he followed instructions and refused to report symptoms.
Daniel watched one video with growing horror.
After a violent impact, Tyler staggered and dropped to one knee.
Michael ordered him to stand.
“I’m dizzy,” Tyler said.
“Scouts don’t recruit dizzy.”
Charles’s voice came through a speaker.
“Teach him pain is information, not weakness.”
Tyler forced himself upright.
His aggression had not grown from confidence.
It grew from years of being taught that compassion destroyed futures.
Michael repeated the lesson when ordering him to hurt Emily.
At the police station, Tyler watched the footage.
He began crying.
“Dad said the tests were safe.”
“Did you experience headaches?” the doctor asked.
“Yes.”
“Memory problems?”
“Sometimes.”
“Did he arrange medical treatment?”
“He said doctors would end my season.”
Independent scans were ordered immediately.
Tyler might have suffered multiple untreated concussions.
The football future Michael claimed to protect had already been destroying him.
Daniel returned to Emily’s bedside.
She was awake, watching snow collect against the hospital window.
“Did Tyler mean to break my hand?”
“Yes.”
“Did Uncle Michael make him?”
“He ordered him.”
“That isn’t the same as making.”
Daniel sat beside her.
“No.”
Emily understood that Tyler had been manipulated and harmed.
She also understood he had chosen to press his foot onto the hatch.
Both truths could exist.
“I don’t want him near me,” she said.
“You do not have to see him.”
“Even if he says sorry?”
“An apology does not buy access to you.”
Emily nodded.
The hospital phone rang.
Sarah was calling from an unknown number.
She spoke quickly.
“Mason and I escaped.”
“Where?”
“Michael took us to the old indoor stadium. Charles is preparing to move the servers.”
“Put Mason on.”
“He’s hiding.”
“Did Michael hurt either of you?”
“No. He needed the memory card.”
“Does he have it?”
Sarah hesitated.
“Yes.”
Daniel heard Mason whisper behind her:
“No, he doesn’t.”
Sarah covered the receiver.
A struggle followed.
Mason returned to the call.
“Mom gave him a fake.”
“Where is the real one?”
“In Tyler’s phone case.”
Police had already placed Tyler’s phone in evidence.
The memory card Emily retrieved had been hidden there by Mason before Sarah took him.
Sarah had never possessed the original.
She had been bargaining with a copy.
Before Daniel could respond, Charles Mercer’s voice entered the call.
“Rebecca taught these children too well.”
Sarah gasped.
Charles continued calmly.
“Bring Emily to the stadium, Daniel. Her injured hand can still authorize the trust.”
The line disconnected.
Daniel looked at Emily’s bandaged fingers.
The injury had not only been intended to prevent her from retrieving evidence.

Someone needed her hand swollen, damaged, and medically documented for a biometric transfer.
👉 Charles wanted Emily’s injured hand at the stadium because the trust recognized more than her fingerprints.
