At fourteen, Emily would gain voting rights through a combination of fingerprints, palm geometry, and blood verification.
The system contained an emergency clause.
If a beneficiary suffered permanent hand damage before activation, a court-appointed family manager could register a replacement biometric guardian.
Michael had prepared the incident statement to establish that Daniel caused or failed to prevent the injury.
Once Daniel was removed, Michael would seek emergency authority over Emily’s shares.
The attack had been designed around the exact hand used by the trust.
Emily was right-handed.
Tyler struck her right hand.
“Did he know?” Daniel asked Detective Cole.
“The text said to break the hand holding the card. That may have been convenient language covering the biometric plan.”
Michael needed the injury documented as severe and potentially permanent.
He had not expected Daniel to reach the hatch fast enough to prevent greater damage.
The hospital surgeon offered guarded optimism.
“Her fingers may regain full function, but we cannot promise that yet.”
Daniel looked at his sleeping daughter.
To the Mercer family, uncertainty was not tragedy.
It was legal opportunity.
Police secured Tyler’s phone and found the memory card inside its protective case. Rebecca’s complete archive contained hundreds of files.
Settlement records.
Medical tests.
Videos of Charles after his supposed death.
Calls between Michael and judges.
And recordings made by Sarah.
Sarah had documented private conversations for years.
In some, she challenged Michael.
In others, she assisted him.
One video showed her rehearsing a false injury story with Tyler.
“If anyone asks, Mason fell into the cabinet while running.”
Mason’s back had been bruised after Michael shoved him.
Sarah taught Tyler the lie rather than contacting authorities.
Another recording showed her hiding Michael’s experimental-drug supplies before a school official visited.
Sarah had not merely remained silent while collecting evidence.
She had protected the system whenever exposure threatened her home, finances, or custody.
Daniel called her.
“You helped him.”
“I was trying to survive long enough to get the boys out.”
“You coached Tyler to lie about Mason’s injuries.”
“Michael said he would take both children if I reported him.”
“You handed him every reason to believe the threat worked.”
Sarah’s breathing shook.
“I know.”
She did not ask Daniel to call her innocent.
She gave police the stadium entrance code and the location of a hidden control room.
Charles planned to delete the youth-testing database before dawn.
“Where is Mason?”
“With me.”
“Bring him to the nearest police station.”
“He refuses to leave until Tyler’s original videos are safe.”
“He is eight. He does not make operational decisions.”
Sarah went quiet.
Daniel heard the truth in her silence.
She had started depending on Mason’s courage the way Michael depended on Tyler’s aggression.
Both parents had placed adult burdens on children.
Sarah whispered:
“I don’t know how to stop thinking the evidence comes first.”
“Start by bringing your son somewhere safe before collecting one more file.”
This time, she obeyed.
At the station, Mason handed officers a tiny drive hidden inside his shoe.
“I copied Tyler’s phone last week.”
“Why?” Cole asked.
“Because he said Dad would destroy it when someone got hurt too badly.”
The backup contained a video Tyler had never shown anyone.
Michael stood beside the pool equipment hatch three days before the party. He tested its weight and measured how far it could fall.
Charles watched through a live video call.
Sarah entered the frame.
She saw them.
Michael said:
“Emily will lose the hand. Daniel will lose control. We all keep what belongs to us.”
Sarah looked toward the hatch.
Then she replied:
“Make sure she survives.”
Daniel stopped the recording.
Sarah covered her face.
“I was pretending to cooperate.”
Mason stared at his mother.
“You told him to hurt her safely.”
