Chapter 2 - THE COMPARTMENT BENEATH THE POOLDaniel rode with Emily to the hospital.

Her breathing remained uneven, but she never cried after the ambulance doors closed. She stared at her injured hand as though it belonged to someone else.

“Can they fix it?” she asked.

Dr. Lena Foster examined the scans after they reached the emergency department.

“Several bones are fractured, and there may be tendon damage. Surgery will give her the best chance of recovering full movement.”

Daniel sat beside Emily’s bed while a nurse prepared her IV.

“You’re going to hold pencils, paint, and beat me at cards again,” he promised.

Emily looked toward the door.

“Is Tyler going to lose football?”

“That is not your responsibility.”

“Uncle Michael said it would be my fault.”

“He knew exactly what to say to make you feel guilty.”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“I only went near the hatch because Aunt Sarah told me something Mom left was inside.”

Daniel became still.

Emily’s mother, Rebecca, had died four years earlier when her car left an icy road outside Tacoma.

“What exactly did Sarah say?”

“She said Mom hid proof before the accident.”

Back at the pool house, Officer Rachel Cole searched the equipment compartment.

The heavy metal hatch opened over pumps, filters, and narrow maintenance pipes. At the rear was a small waterproof safe built into the concrete.

Its lock had been forced recently.

The compartment was empty.

Sarah had disappeared during the confusion after the police arrived. Her car remained in the driveway, but the side gate stood open and wet footprints led toward the neighboring street.

Michael sat beneath the patio awning with an ice pack pressed against his jaw.

“My wife is frightened of Daniel.”

Officer Cole placed the torn incident statement in an evidence bag.

“Your wife was recorded sending Emily toward the hatch.”

“She probably wanted the girl to retrieve a toy.”

“She gave her a key.”

Michael’s expression tightened.

“I don’t know anything about a key.”

Mason spoke from the picnic table.

“Mom took a red folder out yesterday.”

Michael turned toward him.

“You’ve said enough.”

Officer Cole stepped between them.

“Do not speak to him like that again.”

Mason stared at the floor.

He explained that Sarah entered the equipment compartment after midnight. Tyler followed her with his phone and secretly recorded through the kitchen window.

“She found papers. Dad came outside. They fought.”

“What did they say?” the officer asked.

“Mom said Aunt Rebecca was right.”

Michael stood.

“My son is confused.”

Mason shook his head.

“You said the pool was where Rebecca hid the names.”

The officer looked at Michael.

“What names?”

He refused to answer.

Tyler’s phone provided more.

The midnight video showed Sarah kneeling beside the open hatch while Michael held a flashlight. She removed a red waterproof folder from the safe.

Inside were photographs, financial statements, and a handwritten letter.

Michael tried to take them.

Sarah pulled away.

“You told me Rebecca died before she could copy the files.”

“She did.”

“Then who put these here?”

Michael looked toward the house.

“Someone who wants Daniel to believe we killed his wife.”

The recording ended when Sarah noticed Tyler’s reflection in the glass.

The next file had been created seven minutes later.

Michael stood inside Tyler’s bedroom.

“Tomorrow, Emily will open the hatch. You will stop her.”

“How?”

“However you have to.”

“What if she gets hurt?”

Michael placed both hands on his son’s shoulders.

“Your football future, this house, and Mason’s school all depend on those files staying hidden.”

Tyler asked why.

Michael answered:

“Because they prove every dollar supporting your future was stolen from Emily.”

At the hospital, Daniel received the extracted audio.

He looked through the glass at his sleeping daughter.

Rebecca had left evidence that Michael had diverted money belonging to Emily.

And Sarah had used a child to retrieve it rather than warning Daniel.

Then Emily’s school backpack began vibrating beside the hospital chair.

A phone Daniel had never seen was hidden inside the lining.

One message glowed on its screen:
