Chapter 16 - THE THIRD GIRL IN THE BLUE HOODIEMichael refused to drive to the airfield.

Caroline wanted his face near the biometric cameras. She wanted his voice entering security microphones. She wanted every natural reaction she could add to the digital replacement already authorizing the children’s accounts.

He remained inside the federal evidence center while Agent Priya Shah directed the operation.

The live image showed the false Michael holding a pale-blue hoodie beside the aircraft. Behind him, a little girl cried inside the cabin.

“Bring me the girls,” the double repeated in Michael’s voice.

Lena Brooks muted the feed.

“No one brings Rosie or Ruby anywhere.”

Daniel stood beside Caroline, no longer pretending he had been forced onto the runway. Harold remained near the aircraft stairs, one hand inside his coat.

The transfers from all three trusts continued failing because Rosebridge required independent confirmation from Lena. Caroline had copied Michael perfectly.

She had not copied the person Emily chose to stop him if his identity became compromised.

Priya spoke through the airfield system.

“Release the child and surrender.”

Caroline smiled toward the nearest camera.

“Which child?”

The cabin door opened wider.

A girl of approximately five stood beneath the interior light. She wore the blue star-patterned hoodie and carried a stuffed rabbit. Her dark hair had been cut like Rosie’s. A medical bracelet displayed:

ROSE CARTER—ALTERNATE THREE.

Michael felt sick.

The child was not Rosie or Ruby.

She had been prepared to become either one.

The false Michael crouched before her.

“Come to Daddy.”

The girl took one frightened step.

Then she looked toward Caroline.

Permission did not come from the man wearing Michael’s face. It came from the woman directing him.

Federal specialists had identified the double through gait analysis. His right knee carried an old industrial injury. His height and body structure matched Frank Nolan, the towing-company employee paid on the night Emily died.

Frank had disappeared six months earlier.

Caroline had not performed complete surgery. She used a custom facial shell, dental inserts, hair reconstruction, and a voice processor trained on years of recordings Daniel collected inside Michael’s home.

Frank Nolan had become convincing only through cameras, court microphones, and biometric systems designed to trust measurements more than relationships.

Priya addressed him by name.

“Frank, the girl behind you has been identified as Lily Nolan.”

His body changed.

Harold turned sharply.

Caroline did not.

Lily was Frank’s biological daughter. Her mother had died when she was two. After Frank disappeared, official records said the child entered foster care. Caroline removed her from the placement and used her to control him.

“Daddy?” Lily whispered.

The false Michael looked at his daughter through another man’s face.

Caroline raised a remote control.

“Stay inside the role.”

Frank removed the voice processor from his throat.

“Lily, it’s me.”

The natural voice broke whatever training Caroline had built.

The child stared.

Frank tore the facial shell away from one side of his cheek.

Harold pulled a pistol.

Daniel moved first—not toward the child, but behind the aircraft engine.

He had spent years arranging his survival behind other people.

Frank covered Lily as federal vehicles crossed the runway.

Harold fired once into the pavement, then disappeared with Caroline through a maintenance door beneath the private terminal. Daniel surrendered after realizing the aircraft had been disabled remotely.

Frank carried Lily down the stairs.

She did not embrace him.

She cried harder because the face she remembered and the voice she loved no longer belonged together.

Child specialists took her safely without forcing a reunion.

Inside the aircraft, agents found three more blue hoodies, two forged birth certificates, medical molds of Rosie’s fingerprints, and a suitcase containing Emily’s letters.

The trusts stopped transferring when Frank’s copied Michael profile went offline.

The Rosebridge system displayed one final alert:

ALTERNATE THREE REJECTED.

LOCATE ORIGINAL PATERNAL BODY.

Michael stared at the message.

Even after the child had been rescued, the system still described her failure as rejection.

Then investigators examined the name beneath Lily’s false bracelet.

The document had been created four years earlier.

Two weeks before Rosie and Ruby were born.
