Chapter 23 - DANIEL’S TWO CHILDRENDaniel’s plea agreement required a complete financial confession.
It did not require Caleb or Ruby to meet him.
He admitted designing the birthday recording so every older Carter would become disqualified. He knew Bethany would leave marks. He allowed Rosie’s cries to continue. He worked with Caroline to restore Emily’s licensing option fraudulently.
He also stole from Caleb’s trust, maintained Northlake accounts, hid Ruby’s location, and encouraged the child to call him Dad because attachment strengthened his future guardianship petition.
“I cared about both children,” he told the judge.
The prosecutor answered:
“You repeatedly used care as the explanation for conduct that increased your control.”
Daniel did not deny it.
His archive helped locate replacement children, corrupt officials, stolen accounts, and Emily’s evidence. Cooperation mattered.
The archive existed because he recorded people for leverage.
That mattered too.
Daniel pleaded guilty to child-endangerment conspiracy, attempted guardianship fraud, theft from Caleb’s trust, obstruction, identity offenses, and financial conspiracy.
His assistance reduced the recommended sentence.
His planning, professional knowledge, and use of two children increased it.
He received a lengthy custodial term followed by financial supervision and permanent disqualification from managing child assets.
Ruby’s advocate asked whether she wanted a factual message before sentencing.
She did.
Daniel recorded:
“My name is Daniel Mercer. I visited you and allowed you to believe I was your father. I knew Michael was your biological father. I told myself a stable attachment protected you. I also intended to use the attachment in court.”
Ruby listened twice.
“Did he love me?” she asked.
The advocate did not answer for him.
“He says he cared about you.”
“That’s different.”
“Yes.”
Ruby requested no contact.
Years later, she accepted one letter containing family medical history and memories from birthdays. She kept the drawings Daniel had saved.
Preserving good memories did not grant him guardianship retroactively.
Caleb’s relationship with Daniel was more complicated.
Daniel had been present every day before arrest. He coached baseball, read stories, and stole millions from the child he tucked into bed.
Caleb requested supervised prison visits at ten.
During the first, he asked:
“Was I your excuse?”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Emily said I would become that.”
“Was she right?”
“Yes.”
“Did you love me?”
“Yes.”
“Why wasn’t that enough?”
Daniel looked through the glass.
“Because I treated fear of losing you as permission to control everything around you.”
Caleb requested another visit six months later.
The relationship continued cautiously. It never returned to unquestioned parenthood.
The Little Star children received individual reviews.
Some had living parents searching for them.
Some had entered through corrupt foster placements.
One had been removed from a documented abusive home, then retained beyond any lawful order.
Caroline’s program blurred every history so questioning one placement appeared to threaten all children.
The missing girl assigned Emily Carter was fourteen-year-old Nora Hale.
She had been trained to impersonate a younger version of Emily through voice, writing, and archived school records. Caroline intended to age her identity gradually until she could validate BrightSteps’ permanent patent transfers.
Nora had left Little Star voluntarily after learning the real Emily died.
Security footage showed her entering a bus station alone.
