Emily could be heard breathing painfully inside the vehicle.
Frank Nolan approached first. He had been waiting nearby because Caroline instructed him to collect the leather case after Harold’s meeting.
Harold arrived thirty seconds later.
Margaret was not with him.
She had left the company vehicle after the confrontation, refusing to continue when Harold began following Emily’s car.
Harold opened the passenger door and removed the document case.
Frank said:
“She’s alive.”
Harold answered:
“Find the amendment.”
Emily whispered Michael’s name.
Harold leaned toward the broken window.
“Tell me where the Rosebridge keys are.”
She did not answer.
Frank asked again whether he should call 911.
Harold said:
“Not yet.”
The delay lasted six minutes and forty-eight seconds.
During that time, Harold searched the case, Emily’s handbag, and the vehicle console. Frank removed a recorder from Harold’s company car and placed it beside the wreck, hoping it would preserve what happened.
At 10:46, a passing driver called emergency services.
Harold then pretended he had just arrived.
The medical examiner reviewed whether the delay caused Emily’s death.
She suffered internal bleeding, spinal trauma, and lung injury. Immediate assistance might have improved her chances, but experts could not state with certainty that a call seven minutes earlier would have saved her.
The criminal truth remained serious even without certainty.
Harold left an injured woman untreated while searching for money and evidence.
The brake line created a separate question.
Frank admitted weakening it.
Caroline told him the vehicle would remain parked during the confrontation and that the alteration would create a visible warning when Emily attempted to leave.
Frank knew damage could cause failure.
He performed it anyway.
Harold discovered the weakened line before the meeting. An internal message showed Caroline warned him:
Do not allow her to drive beyond the parking area.
Harold followed Emily when she left.
He did not warn her.
He expected fear to return her to the table.
Instead, the brakes failed on the rural curve.
Margaret heard the restored recording in custody.
“I left before the crash,” she said.
“You threatened Rosie before leaving,” Priya answered.
“Yes.”
“Did you know about the brake line?”
“No.”
Investigators found no evidence she knew.
Her presence during the confrontation, threats, later concealment, and role removing Ruby remained separate.
Michael listened only to a transcript of Emily’s final words.
The last clear sentence was:
“Rosie has a sister.”
Emily had tried to tell someone before losing consciousness.
Harold heard her.
He already knew.
Michael asked for the document case.
Inside were letters to him, trust amendments, BrightSteps patent records, and a notebook describing Caroline’s impersonation system.
Emily had learned Caroline copied her voice and signature after discovering Ruby.
She did not know how far the system had progressed.
One letter began:
Michael, I trusted you last because they worked hardest to make me distrust you.
Emily explained that Daniel had created false expense accounts using Michael’s credentials. Caroline supplied altered calendars and insurance records. Harold encouraged every suspicion.
Emily delayed telling Michael about Ruby because she feared his confrontation would expose the child’s location.
“I was wrong to make that decision alone,” she wrote. “Danger was real. So was your right to know.”
Michael stopped reading.
For two years, he had imagined Emily’s secrecy as evidence she stopped trusting him.
Her letter did not make the secrecy harmless.
It gave him an apology he could no longer answer.
The final page named the person most likely to control Caroline if Harold fell.
Jonathan Lane.
Emily’s first attorney had supposedly disappeared.
Victor claimed his brother was dead.
Federal records showed Jonathan Lane remained alive under another name and served as the judge supervising Rosebridge’s independent foundation.
