Chapter 8 - Margaret’s PriceMargaret requested to speak with Michael alone.
He refused.
The meeting occurred inside a monitored hospital conference room with Lena, Officer Ellis, and Margaret’s attorney present.
Michael entered carrying Rosie’s timestamped photographs.
He placed them face down on the table.
Margaret looked at the stack but did not ask to see them.
“Where is Daniel’s phone?” he asked.
“Safe.”
“You watched Bethany hurt Rosie.”
“I tried to stop things from escalating.”
“Rosie said you told Bethany not to leave marks.”
Margaret’s mouth tightened.
“I wanted her to frighten Rosie, not injure her.”
The distinction disgusted him.
“You planned to terrify a four-year-old.”
“I planned to save this family.”
“Rosie is this family.”
Margaret leaned forward.
“You think forty million dollars should sit untouched while your father’s company fails?”
“It belongs to Rosie.”
“She is four.”
“That does not make it yours.”
Margaret revealed Harold’s lenders would call the company debt at noon Monday. The collapse would eliminate pensions, close factories, and destroy the family name.
Harold believed one temporary loan from Rosebridge Trust would stabilize operations.
Emily refused.
Michael would have refused.
So they planned to remove him from trusteeship long enough to complete the transaction.
“We would have repaid it,” Margaret said.
“You filed papers accusing me of hurting my daughter.”
“Only for six months.”
Michael stared at her.
She spoke of losing a child as though it were a scheduling inconvenience.
“What do you want for the phone?”
Margaret’s expression changed.
“Sign a bridge loan for ten million. I surrender the recording, withdraw every statement, and testify that Bethany acted alone.”
“You want me to save the company by lying about your involvement.”
“I want you to protect thousands of families.”
“No. You want Rosie to pay for Harold’s fraud.”
Margaret’s composure broke.
“Your father gave you everything.”
“He gave me fear.”
“He gave you a name.”
“He threw a glass at my daughter.”
“At you.”
“I was holding her.”
Margaret looked away.
For the first time, shame entered the room.
It did not become surrender.
Michael stood.
“The trust has already disqualified every Carter relative.”
“Not everyone.”
Her eyes moved toward Daniel’s empty chair.
Emily’s authentic will named Lena Brooks as trustee, but an older guardianship document still named Daniel individually as Rosie’s godfather.
If Michael died or became legally incapacitated, Daniel could petition for limited guardianship even without Bethany.
Margaret had preserved the original birthday phone as leverage over him.
“What is on the missing section?” Michael asked.
“Daniel knew Bethany was taking Rosie into the bathroom.”
“He admitted that.”
“He knew she would create injuries.”
The room went silent.
Margaret claimed Daniel helped select the small round object Bethany used to leave marks resembling grip pressure without causing serious injury.
Daniel wanted the evidence to appear consistent with an adult male hand.
Bethany lost control when Rosie fought back.
Michael’s breathing changed.
“Why would Daniel help frame me?”
“Because the old guardianship document names him after us.”
Daniel expected Harold and Margaret to control the trust first. If the scheme succeeded, he would regain his job and house.
If it failed and the older Carters were disqualified, he believed he could become Rosie’s independent guardian.
He had prepared both outcomes.
Margaret offered the phone again.
Ten million dollars.
Michael walked out.
Lena followed.
“Do you believe her?”
“I believe she is finally afraid of Daniel.”
Federal investigators searched Margaret’s properties. No phone.
Then Caleb asked to speak with Mara Green.
During the party, he saw his grandmother place Daniel’s phone inside the dinosaur piñata after Michael left. Harold later carried the piñata into the garage.
The burned Carter house still contained party decorations in a storage trailer untouched by the study fire.
Police recovered the damaged piñata.
Inside was the phone, wrapped in foil and sealed inside a plastic bag.
Its screen was cracked.
The memory remained intact.
Daniel had recorded continuously from fourteen minutes before Rosie entered the bathroom until police arrived after the glass incident.
The file was encrypted.
The password hint read:
Caleb’s real birthday.
Bethany had always celebrated Caleb’s birthday on October 18.
His birth certificate said October 17.
Daniel entered the latter date from custody.
The video opened.
Before the guests arrived, Daniel positioned the phone on a shelf facing the hallway.
Harold entered the frame.
“You keep recording until Michael leaves,” he said.
Daniel replied, “And when Bethany and you are disqualified?”
Harold answered:
“The court names you Rosie’s guardian.”
Daniel smiled.
“Then the trust becomes mine to manage.”
Michael stared at the screen.
Margaret had told the truth.
Daniel had not merely failed to prevent the trap.
