Chapter 22 - BETHANY’S VERSION OF A JOKEBethany’s defense began with Daniel.
He designed the recording.
Selected the object.
Promised she would become Rosie’s guardian.
Allowed her father to believe another plan.
Worked with Caroline.
Every fact was true.
Then the prosecutor showed Bethany leading Rosie toward the dark bathroom.
The small round marks came from a silicone dinosaur stamp included in Caleb’s party favors. Daniel selected it because the pressure rings could resemble adult fingertips.
Bethany pressed it against Rosie’s arms while demanding the sentence.
When Rosie refused, Bethany gripped her cheek and pushed her against the wall. The child’s shoulder struck the toilet-paper fixture.
Bethany called it losing control.
The recording showed three separate pauses during which she could have stopped.
Margaret stood in the doorway for part of the incident.
She said:
“Not the face.”
Bethany answered:
“She keeps turning away.”
Rosie cried for her father.
Neither woman opened the door.
The complete video was not played repeatedly. Jurors saw it once. Later testimony relied on still images, medical findings, and transcripts.
Rosie did not testify in open court. Her earlier forensic interview was admitted under child-protection rules after the defense received lawful opportunity to challenge its methods.
Bethany testified.
“I loved Rosie.”
“Did you want her trust?” the prosecutor asked.
“I wanted stability for Caleb.”
“Caleb already had twenty-six million dollars.”
“I did not control it fully.”
“You had already used five million.”
“Daniel managed the accounts.”
“You signed the mortgage payment requests.”
Bethany looked toward Daniel’s empty seat.
The spouses had prepared to sacrifice one another. That did not make either innocent.
“Why say it was a joke?” the prosecutor asked.
“Caroline told me the phrase would make Michael strike me.”
“Did you want him to?”
“I wanted the court to see his temper.”
“You used your own child’s birthday to provoke violence around two four-year-olds.”
“Yes.”
Bethany was convicted of child abuse, coercion, evidence fabrication, attempted custody fraud, conspiracy, and participation in theft from Caleb’s trust.
She was acquitted of intentionally causing serious bodily injury because Rosie’s wounds were not severe and the plan sought visible marks rather than grave harm.
The distinction did not reduce terror to a joke.
Bethany received a substantial prison sentence followed by supervised release. Her role as direct abuser and mother misusing Caleb’s celebration increased the term. Her cooperation concerning Harold and Caroline reduced several financial counts.
Her parental rights concerning Caleb were restricted, not erased automatically. The family court allowed written communication after treatment and review.
Caleb opened no letters for two years.
When he finally read one, Bethany wrote that she had been afraid of losing the house and believed family money should remain inside the family.
Caleb asked his advocate:
“Did she say sorry to Rosie?”
“Yes.”
“Does Rosie have to read it?”
“No.”
“Then I don’t have to answer mine.”
“No.”
He kept the letter without replying.
Bethany requested a mediated apology to Michael.
He declined.
Her accountability did not require his participation.
Before sentencing, she provided the location of Little Star Recovery House. She had discovered it while searching Emily’s storage records but never visited.
The building stood outside Albany under a children’s literacy charity.
Federal officers found classrooms, bedrooms, identity-training equipment, and eleven children.
The twelfth bed belonged to a girl removed three days earlier.
