Chapter 1 - The Birthday Cake Hit the CounterConnor Hale entered his home carrying a blue-and-gold cake decorated for Frederick’s first birthday.

He expected music, candles, and his son’s laughter.

Instead, he heard his mother humiliating his wife.

“Your wife is only good for giving birth and washing dishes!”

Relatives crowded the dining room around platters of lobster, shrimp, roasted meat, and expensive liquor. They laughed while Amy stood alone in the connected kitchen, scrubbing greasy plates with one hand and holding feverish Frederick against her shoulder with the other.

The child’s cheeks were bright red.

His breathing sounded shallow.

Amy’s dress was wet where the baby had been sweating against her chest. Her fingers shook beneath the running water. Dirty pans covered every available surface, yet no one had taken the child from her or offered help.

Connor stopped in the doorway.

The cake box slipped from his hands and struck the counter.

Amy turned.

The terror on her face was not caused by surprise.

It was the expression of someone who had been waiting for rescue but no longer believed it would come.

Connor crossed the kitchen and took Frederick from her arms. The instant his palm touched the baby’s forehead, fear tore through him.

His son was burning.

“How long has he been like this?”

Amy’s lips trembled.

“Your mother said I’m not allowed to stop.”

Connor looked toward Teresa.

She remained at the head of the dining table with a glass of champagne in one hand. Betsy, Teresa’s younger sister, sat beside her eating seafood as though nothing unusual had happened.

Mason, Connor’s younger brother, watched from near the front entrance.

He looked nervous.

Connor wrapped Frederick in a clean towel, guided Amy toward the driveway, and placed them inside his SUV. He locked the doors, turned on the heater, and called emergency services.

“Police and an ambulance—come to my house now.”

Teresa stormed onto the porch.

“You will not humiliate me in front of my family!”

“My son needs a hospital.”

“He has a little fever.”

“He can barely keep his eyes open.”

Amy touched Connor’s sleeve through the open driver’s window.

“She took my phone.”

Connor turned toward his mother.

Teresa stopped walking.

Betsy quietly slipped away from the dining room.

Sirens approached within minutes.

Paramedics took Frederick’s temperature and immediately prepared oxygen. A police officer questioned Amy while Connor opened a hidden folder on his phone that had appeared that morning after an unknown security alert.

He had assumed it contained routine company backups.

Instead, he saw bank transfers, forged signatures, private messages between Teresa and Mason, and scanned copies of documents he had never signed.

Teresa shoved one of the officers trying to keep her away from the ambulance.

“This house belongs to me!”

Connor opened the property file.

It did not.

The original deed named a trust connected to Frederick.

Before Connor could read the details, Mason ran through the front entrance with a thick folder hidden beneath his jacket.

Two officers intercepted him.

Mason twisted free and reached the driveway before a third officer tackled him. The folder burst open.

Contracts scattered across the pavement.

An embossed deed slid to Connor’s feet.

Teresa stared at Mason with naked fury.

“You idiot.”

Connor picked up the deed.

It transferred the mansion to the Frederick Hale Protective Trust on the child’s first birthday.

Today.

His phone displayed another file.

An audio recording.

Connor pressed play.

Teresa’s voice filled the snowy silence.

“Once Connor signs, Amy and the baby disappear.”

Teresa’s face turned deathly pale.

Connor stared at his mother.

“What was I supposed to sign?”

She said nothing.

A paramedic called from the ambulance.

“Mr. Hale, your son has an unexplained medication in his system.”

Connor looked down at the screen again.

Beneath the audio file was an unopened document bearing Frederick’s name.

Its creation date was six months before the child was born.

👉 Frederick’s illness was not an accident, and the conspiracy surrounding him had begun before Amy ever entered the delivery room.
