Chapter 5 - Mason’s Other BirthdayPolice located Mason’s abandoned car beside an interstate hotel.

The cord-blood vial was not inside.
His phone, wallet, and jacket remained on the driver’s seat. Either someone had collected him, or he wanted investigators to believe he had been taken.
Connor opened the hidden folder again.
A new file had unlocked after the deed entered police custody.
It contained a video recorded by Frederick Senior six years earlier.
Connor’s father sat inside his study, visibly ill.
“If you are watching this, Teresa has attempted to control the first-birthday transfer.”
Connor leaned closer.
Frederick Senior explained that he discovered Teresa moving company money through Ridgeway and other “family stabilization” programs. She used medical records and guardianship law to control vulnerable shareholders.
When an executive resisted her, Ridgeway declared the person unstable.
When a spouse threatened exposure, private custody allegations followed.
Frederick Senior began collecting evidence.
He hid it inside a digital archive that would release in stages after the birth of Connor’s first child.
“Why involve a baby?” Amy asked bitterly.
Connor had no defense for his father either.
Frederick Senior believed Teresa would monitor every adult transfer but overlook protections tied to an unborn descendant. He used future trust events as triggers.
The strategy had preserved evidence.
It had also placed Frederick at the center of a war before his birth.
The video continued.
“There may be another child carrying Hale blood. Teresa arranged the conception without Connor’s knowledge. I was unable to locate the mother or the infant.”
The recording was made years before Amy became pregnant.
The second child was not born on Frederick’s birthday.
Betsy’s claim had mixed separate truths.
FH-2 was an older child.
The cord-blood vial came from Frederick and had been mislabeled to create a genetic comparison.
Mason stole it because someone intended to test whether the five-year-old beneficiary was Connor’s biological child.
Connor searched old medical records.
Six years earlier, Teresa insisted he participate in a “family health screening” after his father became ill. Blood and reproductive samples were collected.
Connor signed broad consent forms.
He never imagined they could be used to create an embryo.
Amy sat very still.
“Your mother made a child with your genetic material.”
“We don’t know whether the procedure succeeded.”
“The trust says the child exists.”
Betsy knew more.
Under questioning, she admitted Teresa had selected a woman from Ridgeway’s residential program as the gestational carrier.
The woman was told she was participating in an anonymous surrogacy agreement for an infertile couple.
After delivery, the baby disappeared into a private guardianship.
“Where is the child?” Connor asked.
“I don’t know.”
“What name?”
“Teresa called him Caleb.”
A five-year-old boy named Caleb Rowe appeared in Ridgeway’s school-support records.
His legal guardian was Betsy.
Amy stared at her.
“You raised him?”
Betsy began sobbing.
“I visited him. Ridgeway raised him.”
“Does he know you as his mother?”
“He knows me as Aunt Betsy.”
Connor felt nauseated.
Teresa had created a backup heir using his biological material, then placed the child under her sister’s access.
If Frederick’s trust could not be controlled, Caleb might challenge it as Connor’s firstborn son.
The birthday timing became even more dangerous.
At midnight, Frederick’s shares had vested because the trust recognized him as Connor’s first legal child.
Proof that Caleb was older and biologically Connor’s could freeze the transfer.
That was why Mason stole the cord blood.
Someone needed the comparison before the court opened the next morning.
Detective Monroe received a location ping from Mason’s hidden company device.
It came from Ridgeway Family Restoration Center.
Police approached the facility.
A security camera showed Mason entering with the vial.
Teresa was waiting inside.
Beside her stood a frightened five-year-old boy holding a small birthday balloon.
Mason gave Teresa the sample.
She touched the boy’s hair and said:

“Tomorrow, Caleb becomes the son Connor was supposed to have.”
👉 Teresa had prepared a second child to replace Frederick as heir, but no one knew what Caleb had been told about his real family.
