Chapter 13 - The Man Who Looked Like Frederick HaleInvestigators traced the call to an abandoned executive retreat in the Tennessee hills.

The building belonged to Hale Meridian but had been removed from corporate maps after Frederick Senior’s death.

Police found recent food, medication, clothing, and a live communications system.

The man from the video was gone.

His fingerprints matched Frederick Senior’s archived records.

The original death investigation had relied on dental fragments recovered from a burned vehicle. No intact body had been identified.

Frederick may have staged his death to continue fighting Ridgeway.

Or someone may have assumed his identity using the same methods as Teresa and Theresa.

Connor searched the retreat’s office.

A wall displayed photographs of Amy, Hannah, Selene, Caleb, Finn, Mason, Frederick, and dozens of children Connor did not recognize.

Strings connected medical clinics, guardianship cases, and family corporations.

Amy’s photograph stood at the center.

Beneath it:

Host Line—Primary Daughter.

Amy looked toward Laura.

“Did Frederick know Vale was my biological father?”

Laura nodded.

“He believed Vale created several biological lines to control families through future marriages.”

“Why am I primary?”

“I don’t know.”

A safe inside the retreat contained audio diaries recorded after Frederick’s supposed death.

The voice matched the man Connor remembered.

In one recording, Frederick described infiltrating the Host network by maintaining his legal death.

He feared Teresa would destroy the evidence if she knew he survived.

In another, he admitted allowing Connor to remain unaware while the birthday plan developed.

“I needed Teresa confident enough to gather every conspirator in one place.”

Connor switched off the recording.

His father had used the family as bait.

He allowed Amy to enter a marriage selected by Teresa.

He allowed Frederick’s birth to trigger the takeover attempt.

He believed hidden cameras and digital safeguards would prevent irreversible harm.

They had not prevented a sick baby from being medicated and denied antibiotics.

“Even if he is alive,” Connor said, “he does not get to call this protection.”

Amy agreed.

The retreat server held the final document Frederick warned them not to open.

It was encrypted to Amy’s fingerprint and voice.

Detective Monroe advised waiting until the system could be isolated.

Amy refused to let another man decide when she learned the truth.

She placed her hand on the scanner.

The document opened partially before the server disconnected.

Only the first page appeared.

Host Succession Candidate: Amy Vale Bennett Hale.

Dr. Charles Vale had not merely fathered Amy secretly.

He named her as his intended successor inside Ridgeway.

The file described her compassion, resistance to coercion, and attachment to children as desirable traits.

Amy laughed bitterly.

“They chose me because they thought kindness could be turned into control.”

Laura read the next visible line.

Candidate must experience maternal loss, financial instability, controlled marriage, and threat to first child before activation.

Amy’s entire life resembled a training sequence.

Laura’s disappearance.

The arranged meeting with Connor.

Teresa’s abuse.

Frederick’s illness.

The birthday confrontation.

The conspiracy may not have been designed only to remove Amy.

It may have been designed to force her into accepting leadership so she could “protect” the children the network controlled.

The Host believed the ideal successor would be someone harmed by the system but convinced only centralized authority could end it.

Amy stepped away from the screen.

“I will never lead Ridgeway.”

Connor looked at the photographs of hidden children.

“That may be exactly what they expect you to say first.”

A motion alarm sounded outside.

The elderly man entered the retreat voluntarily with his hands raised.

He looked like Frederick Senior.

Connor faced him.

“Are you my father?”

The man’s eyes filled with pain.

“I was the man who raised you.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

He admitted he was not Frederick Hale.

His name was Samuel Grant.

Frederick’s identical cousin.

Ridgeway trained him to substitute for the founder during security risks and private negotiations. After the real Frederick died, Samuel continued operating his founder identity to preserve the investigation.

“Who killed my father?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who has been speaking through his account?”

“Sometimes me. Sometimes The Host.”

Samuel pointed toward Amy’s file.

“Vale is not The Host.”

“Then who is?”

Samuel looked at Laura.

“She knows.”

Laura backed away.

“I don’t.”

“You met her the night you disappeared.”

Her.

The architect was a woman.

Samuel opened a hidden drawer and removed a photograph from Laura’s supposed overdose scene.

Teresa stood near the bed.

Dr. Vale stood beside her.

A third woman faced away from the camera.

She wore Laura’s coat.

Laura stared at the image.

“That’s my sister.”

Amy had never known her mother had a sister.

👉 The woman behind Ridgeway may have been Amy’s own aunt, whose identity had been erased from the family before Amy was born.
