Chapter 1 - The Sound Behind the Laundry DoorGabriel Hart returned to Columbus two days early.

His consulting project in Chicago had ended unexpectedly, and he wanted to surprise his family before midnight. He entered the dark suburban house quietly, expecting silence.
Instead, he heard the washing machine.
The sound came from the laundry room at the end of the hallway. A weak light glowed beneath the door.
Gabriel pushed it open.
Sixteen-year-old Lucas knelt on the cold tile floor, scrubbing clothes by hand inside a blue plastic basin. Another load spun inside the washing machine beside him.
Lucas’s clothes were piled near his knees.
The clothes inside the machine belonged to Candice and Wyatt.
Lucas looked up sharply.
“They went to Miami on vacation.”
Gabriel set down his bag.
Candice had told him all four of them would wait until he returned before taking another family trip.
“Why didn’t you go?”
Lucas lowered his eyes.
“Wyatt said there wasn’t enough room.”
Gabriel stepped closer and saw that his son’s hands were raw and red. Several knuckles had split from cold water and detergent.
“Roll up your sleeves, son.”
Lucas froze.
“Dad—”
“Please.”
Lucas slowly pulled the fabric upward.
Yellowing bruises, scratches, and dark finger-shaped marks covered both forearms.
Gabriel felt something violent rise inside him, but he forced his voice to remain controlled. He removed his smartphone and began recording the injuries, the basin, the separate clothing piles, and the dark room.
Lucas whispered, “I’m not allowed to use the washing machine for my clothes.”
“Who made that rule?”
“Candice.”
“And the bruises?”
Lucas stared at the floor.
Gabriel turned off the washing machine and guided him into the kitchen.
At dawn, he placed oatmeal pancakes in front of Lucas. The boy ate too quickly, barely chewing.
“When did you last have a full meal?” Gabriel asked.
Lucas stopped.
“Tuesday.”
It was Saturday.
Gabriel’s hand tightened around the edge of the table.
“Now tell me everything.”
The story came in pieces.
Candice restricted his meals because she said he was wasteful. She made him sleep in the laundry room when he challenged her. Wyatt struck him during “discipline sessions” while Candice watched. Lucas’s birthday money had disappeared. His school lunches had been canceled.
And whenever Gabriel called from Chicago, Candice stood nearby and made Lucas say everything was fine.
Then Lucas gave him one final clue.
“Candice hid Mom’s silver cup in her nightstand.”
The cup had belonged to Anna, Gabriel’s first wife and Lucas’s mother. It was the only family keepsake recovered after Anna’s fatal car accident twelve years earlier.
Gabriel marched into the master bedroom.
The silver cup was wrapped in cloth inside Candice’s nightstand.
Beneath it lay pawn-shop receipts for Anna’s jewelry, unfamiliar bank cards bearing Lucas’s name, and a thick hidden folder.
Gabriel opened it.
The first document was an application to place Lucas inside a locked behavioral institution.
The second transferred control of his inheritance to Candice.
The third was a photograph dated three months earlier.
Candice stood outside a private medical facility beside a thin woman in a wheelchair.
The woman’s face was older and scarred.
But Gabriel knew her eyes.
