Anna lay in the rear seat under a blanket, sedated but breathing. Her medical bracelet identified her as Evelyn Shaw.
Marlene presented guardianship documents signed by Candice.
The documents appeared valid until Nora transmitted Anna’s original passport and missing-person report.
Marlene attempted to explain the identity change as a protective measure.
Officers detained her for questioning.
No final arrest or legal resolution followed. Her attorney immediately claimed Anna had voluntarily entered private care after a psychological crisis.
Anna was transported to an independent hospital in Cleveland.
Gabriel stood outside her room for nearly an hour before entering.
She looked older, thinner, and more fragile than the woman he remembered.
A scar crossed her temple.
Her eyes opened when he approached.
For several seconds, she showed no recognition.
Then Gabriel placed the silver cup beside her hand.
Anna touched the engraved rim.
“You kept it.”
“Candice did.”
Her fingers tightened.
“Lucas?”
“He’s safe.”
“The other boy?”
Gabriel could barely speak.
“Wyatt is safe too.”
Anna began crying.
She remembered fragments.
The hospital nursery.
Candice claiming the second baby died.
A nurse carrying an infant through a service corridor.
Anna’s investigation.
The crash.
Then rooms without windows, changing names, and medications that blurred years together.
“Did Candice cause the crash?” Gabriel asked.
“I saw her car behind me.”
“Was she driving?”
“I don’t know.”
“Marlene?”
Anna shut her eyes.
“There was a man.”
“Who?”
“He wore Gabriel’s company jacket.”
Gabriel’s consulting firm had distributed hundreds of jackets to employees.
The detail did not identify anyone.
Anna remembered being pulled from the wreck before emergency responders arrived. Candice told her Lucas would be harmed if she tried to escape.
Later, Candice brought Wyatt to Cedar Vale.
“She wanted me to confirm he was my son,” Anna whispered.
“Did you?”
“I saw the mark.”
“What mark?”
“Both babies had the same small crescent birthmark behind the left knee.”
Lucas had one.
Gabriel had seen it since infancy.
Wyatt refused to let doctors examine that area during sports physicals. Candice always supplied private medical records instead.
The DNA results had still not arrived.
Evelyn called the laboratory.
The samples had been marked contaminated after a courier reported the package damaged.
Someone had intercepted them.
An independent hospital collected new samples under police observation.
Anna asked to see Lucas and Wyatt.
Doctors advised a gradual reunion because of her condition.
Lucas entered first.
Anna touched his face and whispered his childhood nickname.
Then Wyatt approached.
She looked behind his left knee.
The crescent mark was there.
Anna pulled both boys close.
Candice called Gabriel during the reunion.
He answered on speaker.
“You found her,” she said.
“Yes.”
“You think that makes you their father again?”
“I never stopped being their father.”
“You stopped asking questions sixteen years ago.”
Gabriel’s anger sharpened.
“You stole a newborn.”
Candice laughed bitterly.
“Ask Anna who signed the surrender form.”
Anna’s face changed.
“What form?”
Candice sent a photograph.
It showed an infant-transfer authorization bearing Anna’s signature.
The document stated that Baby B could be placed permanently with Candice in exchange for guaranteed protection of Baby A.
Anna stared at it.
“I never signed that.”
Candice replied:
May you like
“The original says otherwise.”
👉 Anna recognized both boys as her sons, but Candice produced a document claiming their mother had voluntarily surrendered Wyatt.
