Chapter 15 - The Boy Who Was Supposed to VanishGabriel did not remember signing anything during the twins’ delivery.
He had been driving toward the hospital when another vehicle struck him at an intersection. Paramedics treated him for a concussion before allowing him to continue.
The hospital record described him as confused.
A nurse presented several emergency forms in the parking entrance before he reached Anna’s room.
He signed without reading.
One may have been used to create the infant-release authorization.
Evelyn’s notary seal had been stolen from her office during the same week.
The conspiracy had collected genuine signatures, real credentials, and moments of medical vulnerability. The documents were not entirely forged.
They were assembled into lies.
Lucas and Wyatt returned to the suburban house only to collect personal belongings under police supervision.
Neither wanted to stay there.
Lucas entered the laundry room and looked at the blue basin.
Wyatt stood behind him.
“I’m sorry.”
Lucas did not answer immediately.
“You brought food.”
“I also hurt you.”
“Both are true.”
Wyatt lowered his eyes.
“I don’t know how to be your brother.”
Lucas picked up the basin and placed it in a trash bag.
“We start by not lying.”
Gabriel listened from the doorway.
He understood that discovering their relationship did not repair it automatically. Truth created responsibility, not instant forgiveness.
Anna moved into a protected rehabilitation unit where her identity could be restored independently of Candice’s paperwork. She met both boys in short visits, learning the details of lives stolen from all three of them.
Evelyn petitioned to freeze the twin trusts until an independent guardian could review every transaction.
No final custody ruling appeared.
No trial began.
Candice, Marlene, Morrow, Dr. Cole, and several Ridgeway officials remained entangled in conflicting investigations.
Some cooperated.
Some disappeared.
Others claimed they had protected children from a dangerous inheritance battle.
The original hospital ledger remained missing.
Then Gabriel received a package without a return address.
Inside was the gray hidden folder from Candice’s nightstand.
He believed police had seized it.
This copy was thicker.
The first half contained the documents he had already seen.
The second half held records Candice had removed before he returned from Chicago.
There were photographs of Anna at Cedar Vale.
Trust payments.
Ridgeway transport plans.
And a handwritten diary kept by Candice over sixteen years.
One entry described taking Wyatt from the hospital.
Anna asked me to hide him for one night. Morrow told me never to deliver him to Gabriel. He said Gabriel’s signature gave them control.
Another entry described the crash.
Marlene says Anna survived. Charles wants her legally dead. Gabriel must believe the river took her.
The final entries concerned Lucas’s sixteenth birthday.
The twins are becoming harder to divide. Wyatt questions his birth. Lucas found Anna’s old school photograph. Gabriel returns too often. Ridgeway must take Lucas before the accounts merge.
Gabriel turned the page.
A sealed DNA report had been attached.
It confirmed Lucas and Wyatt were full biological twins.
Beneath it was a photograph of Candice holding newborn Wyatt beside Anna’s father.
On the back, Candice had written:
He paid me to take Baby B. But Baby B was never the child he truly wanted removed.
Gabriel opened the folder’s final envelope.
Inside was the hospital’s original newborn ledger.
Three entries appeared during the same hour.
Baby A—Lucas Hart.
Baby B—Wyatt Hart.
Baby C—Male, mother unidentified.
A red line crossed through Lucas’s name.
Beside it, someone had written:
PRIMARY HEIR—TRANSFER FAILED.
Wyatt had not been the intended target.
Lucas was.
Candice’s removal of Wyatt may have been a mistake, a substitution, or an act that disrupted someone else’s plan.
Gabriel’s phone vibrated.
A live video appeared from Candice.
She stood inside a dim room beside the unidentified teenager Owen had described. Behind them were shelves filled with Ridgeway files.
Candice held up the missing ledger.
“You found the second folder.”
“Where are you?”
“That does not matter.”
“Why was Lucas marked for transfer?”
“Because Anna’s father did not create the trusts to protect two grandsons.”
“What were they for?”
“To identify which boy inherited something hidden in Anna’s bloodline.”
Anna entered the room behind Gabriel and heard the call.
Her face emptied.
Candice smiled at her through the screen.
“Tell him, Anna. Tell Gabriel why your father was terrified of Lucas.”
Anna gripped the back of a chair.
“I never told anyone.”
“Twelve years in Cedar Vale, and you still protect the family secret.”
Gabriel turned toward her.
“What secret?”
Anna looked at Lucas and Wyatt standing together in the hallway.
Then she whispered:
“My father believed one of the twins was not humanly possible.”
Gabriel stared at her.
Anna opened the silver keepsake cup.
For the first time, she twisted the engraved base instead of lifting the lid.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a tiny glass vial containing a newborn blood sample and a note written by her father.
Test Baby A before his sixteenth birthday. If the marker activates, do not let the Hart family keep him.
Lucas stepped closer.
“What marker?”
Before Anna could answer, every light in the house went out.
The staircase camera activated by itself.
Its live feed showed a man standing outside the front door in the rain.
He wore Gabriel’s old company jacket.
In one hand, he held Anna’s missing medical file.
In the other, he carried a second silver cup identical to hers.
He looked directly into the camera.
