Chapter 4 - The Woman Registered as Evelyn ShawEvelyn requested an emergency order preventing Lucas from being removed from the state.
Gabriel drove toward Cedar Vale before dawn with a private investigator named Colin Reese. He did not tell Candice where he was going.
She believed he had gone to his office.
Lucas remained with Dr. Maya and an off-duty police officer Evelyn trusted.
Wyatt stayed at the house with Candice.
Cedar Vale Neurorehabilitation stood behind tall trees outside Cleveland. Its public website described treatment for patients with severe memory disorders, traumatic brain injuries, and psychiatric complications.
Gabriel presented the photograph.
The receptionist studied it and denied recognizing the woman.
Colin requested the facility’s patient directory.
“Private information,” the receptionist said.
Gabriel placed the silver safe-deposit key on the counter.
The woman’s expression changed.
She reached beneath the desk.
Colin saw the silent-alarm button and stopped her.
“We are not here to remove anyone. We need confirmation that Anna Hart is alive.”
“No patient by that name exists.”
“What about Evelyn Shaw?”
The unfamiliar bank cards in Candice’s folder included monthly payments to a patient account under that name.
The receptionist stopped denying.
A facility administrator appeared with two security employees.
He claimed Evelyn Shaw had been discharged the previous evening by her legal guardian.
“Who was the guardian?” Gabriel asked.
“Candice Hart.”
Gabriel felt the words like a physical blow.
Candice had registered herself as Anna’s guardian.
The administrator produced a court order stating Evelyn Shaw was unable to recognize relatives and required protected care.
The document included a photograph.
It was Anna.
Her identity had been changed.
Her legal death allowed Candice to manage her under a false name without questions from Gabriel or Lucas.
“Where was she taken?”
“That information is confidential.”
Colin showed him an emergency preservation notice from Evelyn.
The administrator called his attorney.
While they waited, a nurse approached Gabriel in the hallway.
She was trembling.
“I saw your photograph in the patient’s room.”
Gabriel turned.
“What photograph?”
“An old family picture. You, the patient, and a baby.”
“Lucas?”
“She kept it inside her pillowcase.”
The nurse said Anna was often heavily sedated. On clearer days, she asked about two boys.
Gabriel frowned.
“Two?”
“She kept saying, ‘Where is the other one?’”
Before Gabriel could ask more, the administrator ordered the nurse away.
Colin obtained the discharge footage.
Candice had arrived at 11:17 p.m. with a man wearing a Ridgeway Youth Center jacket. Anna was transferred into a dark medical van.
Wyatt sat in the passenger seat.
Gabriel stared at the image.
Candice had brought Wyatt to the facility where Anna was hidden.
The nurse slipped Gabriel a folded medication sheet.
On the back, Anna had written repeatedly:
LUCAS IS SAFE. BABY B IS NOT DEAD.
Gabriel read the sentence twice.
Lucas had been Anna’s only child.
At least, that was what the hospital told them.
Then his phone rang.
Candice sounded cheerful.
“Are you coming home for dinner?”
“Soon.”
“I scheduled Lucas’s Ridgeway intake tomorrow morning. We need to discuss it.”
“You scheduled what?”
“He has become dangerous. Wyatt finally told me everything.”
Gabriel looked at the footage of Wyatt beside Anna’s transport van.
“What did Wyatt tell you?”
Candice lowered her voice.

“That Lucas knows too much.”
