Chapter 3 - The Camera Candice ForgotGabriel moved Lucas’s important documents into Evelyn’s office and arranged an independent medical examination.
Dr. Maya Collins documented the bruises, raw hands, nutritional deprivation, and signs of repeated restraint. She explained that the color differences suggested injuries from multiple dates.
Lucas answered every question carefully.
He kept looking toward the clinic door.
“Are you afraid Candice will come in?” Maya asked.
“She always knows where I am.”
Gabriel checked Lucas’s phone.
Candice had installed a parental-monitoring application that recorded location, messages, and microphone activity. The application was hidden beneath a calculator icon.
Gabriel removed the phone’s connection and preserved the software for evidence.
Back at the house, Evelyn examined the smart-home logs.
Most security footage had been deleted. Candice had administrator access and erased the living-room and hallway recordings every seven days.
But she forgot about one device.
Three years earlier, Gabriel installed a small camera above the staircase after packages began disappearing from the foyer. It stored backup clips through a separate account connected to his old work email.
The camera did not show the laundry room.
It showed the hallway outside it.
The first recovered clip showed Candice forcing Lucas through the laundry-room door at midnight.
Wyatt carried the blue basin behind them.
Another clip showed Lucas leaving before dawn, moving stiffly while Candice inspected the hallway.
A third showed Wyatt striking Lucas in the ribs.
Candice stood nearby.
She did not stop him.
She raised her phone and recorded.
Lucas covered his face when he saw the footage.
“She said she needed proof I attacked Wyatt.”
“But the recording shows the opposite,” Gabriel said.
“She edited it.”
Candice had filmed only the final seconds, after Lucas pushed Wyatt away.
The footage she saved made Lucas appear aggressive.
The hidden staircase camera captured the full sequence.
Evelyn copied every file.
Then they found the clip that changed Wyatt’s role.
It showed him entering the laundry room alone after Candice went upstairs. He carried food wrapped inside a dish towel.
He slid it beneath the door.
Wyatt had participated in the abuse.
But he had also secretly fed Lucas.
“He told me not to trust him,” Lucas said. “He said Candice checked his phone.”
“Did he ever explain why he hit you?”
“She told him she’d send him away if he didn’t.”
Gabriel realized both boys might be under control in different ways.
At 3:40 p.m., the front-door camera sent an alert.
Candice’s SUV entered the driveway.
She and Wyatt were supposed to remain away for four more days.
Evelyn gathered the documents.
“We leave now.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“If we disappear, she destroys whatever is still hidden.”
“You cannot confront her violently.”
“I won’t.”
He moved Lucas into the den with Maya’s emergency contact information and instructed him to call if Candice approached.
The front door opened.
Candice entered carrying shopping bags and wearing a bright vacation jacket. Wyatt followed silently.
She froze when she saw Gabriel.
“You’re home.”
“Project ended early.”
Her eyes moved toward the master bedroom hallway.
Then toward Lucas.
She smiled.
“You should have called.”
Gabriel kissed her cheek without warmth.
“I wanted to surprise you.”
Candice placed the bags down.
“We missed you.”
Wyatt looked at Lucas’s clean clothes and bandaged hands.
His face went pale.
Candice noticed.
Her smile tightened.
That evening, she served dinner and acted as though nothing had happened. Gabriel watched her control every conversation.
When Lucas reached for a second piece of bread, Candice touched his wrist.
“He’s had enough.”
Gabriel placed another piece on his son’s plate.
“No. He hasn’t.”
Silence filled the table.
Later, Candice entered the master bedroom alone.
The staircase camera recorded her opening the nightstand and finding the silver cup missing.
She immediately called someone.
