Chapter 9 - River HouseFederal agents surrounded River House before sunset.

The estate stood above a frozen river behind iron gates and dense woodland. Official records described it as a rehabilitation center for executives recovering from neurological injuries.

No patients were registered there.

The search warrant covered Dr. Crowe, Victor Sloane, and evidence connected to Henry Hartwell’s disappearance.

Victor’s attorneys challenged the warrant before agents reached the front door.

Judge Voss suspended portions involving private medical rooms.

Marcus used Hartwell Global’s ownership records to prove the company had financed River House through concealed loans.

That gave federal agents access to the administrative wing.

The patient wing remained contested.

Lena watched the operation from her hospital room.

She had spent four years grieving Henry. Anger, hope, and suspicion fought inside her.

“If he is alive, he chose not to contact me,” she said.

Evelyn sat beside her.

“Or Victor prevented him.”

“Henry built hidden rooms beneath my house. He recorded messages after his yacht exploded. He was not helpless.”

The agents found the photograph location.

The room was empty.

A medical bed remained warm. Oxygen equipment had been disconnected minutes earlier. A half-finished cup of black coffee sat beside Henry’s reading glasses.

He had been there.

A concealed elevator led beneath the estate.

Judge Voss’s suspension blocked the agents until Evelyn obtained a second warrant from an independent magistrate.

By then, the lower rooms had been cleared.

One wheelchair track ended beside a private loading dock.

A helicopter had departed without a registered flight plan.

Dr. Crowe remained behind.

He surrendered in exchange for protection.

Crowe admitted Henry survived the yacht explosion with serious injuries. Victor arranged treatment at River House and declared him dead publicly.

“Was Henry held against his will?” Lena asked through the investigators.

“Eventually.”

“What does that mean?”

“At first, Henry chose to disappear.”

The words struck harder than she expected.

Henry believed Victor’s network had reached the courts, police, and Hartwell board. He staged his death to investigate without exposing Lena.

He expected the operation to last six months.

Then Victor discovered his location and took control of the medical team.

Crowe altered Henry’s medication, restricted communication, and forced him to record messages used to manipulate Evelyn and Lena.

“Which recordings were voluntary?” Evelyn asked.

“I don’t know.”

Every message from Henry became uncertain.

His warnings might be genuine.

His trust amendments might have been coerced.

Even the revelation about Marcus could have been released at a time designed to divide them.

Crowe described the Winter Ledger.

It contained legitimate evidence, protected witness identities, and fabricated crimes. Victor believed no regulator could use it safely because separating truth from falsehood required Henry’s private key.

The key was not a password.

It was a sequence of marked bills combined with Henry’s heartbeat pattern.

Victor needed Henry alive.

Adrian needed Lena’s corporate authority.

Their interests aligned until the gala failed.

“Where did the helicopter take them?” Marcus asked.

Crowe gave them a code.

WHITE BRIDGE.

The destination did not appear on aviation maps.

Thomas Reed recognized it.

White Bridge was Northgate’s emergency transfer system beneath Hartwell Global’s headquarters.

The company’s downtown tower contained an executive evacuation floor unknown to ordinary staff.

Henry had been moved into Lena’s own building.

Marcus initiated a lockdown.

The security system rejected him.

Adrian’s credentials had been restored through Judge Voss’s emergency order.

Despite the assault investigation, Adrian now controlled the headquarters.

A live internal camera appeared on Lena’s hospital screen.

Adrian stood inside the executive boardroom.

Victor Sloane sat at the head of the table.

Henry Hartwell occupied a wheelchair between them.

Adrian looked toward the camera.

“Come sign the merger, Lena, or your father disappears for good.”

👉 Henry initially chose to fake his death but later became Victor’s prisoner, and Adrian used the corrupt court order to seize both him and Hartwell Global headquarters.
