Chapter 1 - The House Prepared to Become a CoffinAnna Whitmore could barely hold herself upright against the staircase.

Her joints trembled. Her vision pulsed between darkness and the dim yellow light above the front entrance. The autoimmune disorder she had managed for years had worsened during the previous week, leaving her dependent on medication taken at precisely scheduled intervals.

Jason knew that.

He stood five feet away, calmly zipping a rolling suitcase.

“Please,” Anna whispered. “I can barely stand. Don’t leave me.”

Jason’s mother, Evelyn, waited beside the open door with undisguised impatience. His father, Richard, checked his watch. His younger sister, Paige, carried two travel bags toward the driveway.

Jason smiled as though Anna had complained about rain.

“You’ll be fine for seventy-four days.”

He pulled the suitcase over the threshold.

Evelyn shut the door.

The lock turned from outside.

Anna listened to their vehicles leave the driveway before forcing herself into the kitchen. Her pill organizer stood beside the sink.

Every compartment was empty.

The three prescription bottles normally stored above the refrigerator were missing.

Then the lights died.

Anna turned the faucet.

Nothing came out.

Her phone showed a black screen despite having been fully charged that morning. The charging outlets no longer worked. When she crawled back to the entrance, she discovered a metal bar had been lowered across the door from outside.

The kitchen windows would not open.

Someone had screwed them shut.

This was not abandonment.

It was preparation.

Anna searched the dark house until she found an old emergency phone inside a drawer beneath expired batteries and instruction manuals. One bar of signal appeared.

“Police,” she gasped when the call connected. “My husband locked me inside without my medicine.”

She collapsed beside the kitchen table.

Firefighters found her forty minutes later.

They smashed through the back door and carried her out beneath an oxygen mask. Detective Laura Bennett photographed the sealed windows, disconnected utilities, empty medicine organizer, and exterior locks.

Anna survived an acute adrenal crisis by minutes.

For seventy-four days, she recovered at a protected medical residence while Laura quietly built the case.

Then Jason returned.

He was laughing as he stepped from the family SUV with Evelyn, Richard, and Paige behind him.

The laughter stopped when he saw police tape across the house.

Anna stood alive beside Detective Laura.

Jason’s suitcase slipped from his hand.

Laura raised an evidence photograph.

It showed Jason outside a private clinic, handing Anna’s missing prescription bottles to a woman in a gray coat.

“We know where her medicine went,” Laura said.

Jason’s face collapsed.

Anna stepped forward.

“Now tell me who she is.”

A second police vehicle stopped behind him.

Its rear door opened.

A pale hand appeared against the frame.

Then a woman stepped onto the driveway.

She had Anna’s face.

👉 Jason had not stolen Anna’s medicine for a mistress—the woman receiving it looked exactly like the wife he expected to die.
