Chapter 5 - The Mother Who Was Declared DeadMargaret Stone was removed from the Maine facility under federal protection.

Her medical records showed years of unnecessary psychiatric medication and heavily restricted contact. She had repeatedly tried to send letters to Anna.

The facility returned every one of them to Richard.

Anna met her mother in a secured hospital room.

Margaret’s hair was white, but her eyes had not changed.

Anna remembered them from childhood mornings, bedtime stories, and the last day she saw her mother carried into an ambulance.

“I thought you died.”

Margaret lifted a trembling hand.

“They told me you were safer if you believed that.”

Anna did not embrace her immediately.

“You had twenty-three years.”

“I spent most of them under guardianship.”

“You recognized Richard.”

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

Margaret looked toward Detective Laura.

“Henry’s former business partner.”

Richard helped Henry establish Whitmore Therapeutics. When the company discovered a treatment for the hereditary adrenal disorder affecting the women in Margaret’s family, the two men fought over ownership.

Henry wanted the treatment distributed affordably.

Richard wanted exclusive control.

Margaret discovered Richard had concealed trial failures and falsified patient results. She threatened to expose him.

Days later, she was declared psychologically unstable.

Henry allowed the commitment order.

“Dad helped them imprison you?”

“He believed it would last two weeks.”

“Did he ever try to bring you home?”

“Eventually. Richard threatened to expose what happened when the twins were born.”

Margaret had delivered three girls.

Anna and Rebecca were identical twins.

The third child was not.

She was older by eleven months.

Margaret had given birth before marrying Henry, while working at a medical research center with Richard.

The father was Richard.

“What happened to her?” Anna asked.

“Richard’s wife raised her.”

Anna’s mind moved toward Jason’s family.

Evelyn had two children—Jason and Paige.

But family records showed Paige was born seven years after Jason.

Jason’s original birth certificate had been sealed.

Margaret shook her head.

“Not Jason.”

Anna thought of the person who controlled the foundation, removed her phone, and locked the door.

“Evelyn?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Evelyn is my daughter.”

Jason’s mother was Anna and Rebecca’s older half-sister.

That made Jason their nephew by blood.

Richard had arranged his son’s marriage to his own granddaughters’ half-sister’s child while hiding the relationship from everyone except Evelyn.

“Did Evelyn know?” Anna asked.

“She knew I was her mother. I don’t know when Richard told her about you.”

Detective Laura brought Evelyn into a separate interview room.

At first she denied everything.

Then Laura showed her the genetic result.

Evelyn stopped speaking.

Anna entered.

“You locked your own sister inside that house.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“I did not think of you as my sister.”

“That changes nothing.”

“My entire life, Richard told me Margaret gave me away because she wanted Henry’s legitimate children instead.”

“He raised you with hatred.”

“He raised me.”

“And you repaid him by helping kill us?”

Evelyn’s expression cracked at the plural.

“I never touched Rebecca.”

“You helped Jason control her medication.”

“I believed she needed supervision.”

“You believed whatever allowed you to keep the company.”

Evelyn admitted knowing about the seventy-four-day plan. She claimed Jason promised Anna would be discovered before death and placed under medical guardianship.

Anna laughed once.

“He shut off the water.”

Evelyn looked toward the floor.

“Richard said it would make the scene convincing.”

A sealed evidence photograph arrived from Maine.

It showed Evelyn visiting Margaret eleven years earlier.

On the back, Margaret had written:

She knew everything before Jason met Anna.

👉 Evelyn had known she was Anna’s sister for years—meaning Jason’s marriage was part of the plan from the beginning.
