Chapter 15 - The Woman in the Second Police CarSamuel denied that Laura was a Whitmore child.

He said his wife gave birth to her in a county hospital far from the research center.

The birth certificate supported him.

So did childhood photographs.

But the bracelet carried Laura’s birth date and blood type.

Margaret remembered a fourth infant briefly admitted to the Whitmore program.

“She was not mine,” Margaret said.

“Whose was she?” Laura asked.

“Richard said she belonged to a nurse.”

Samuel closed his eyes.

His wife, Elaine Reed, had worked as Margaret’s recovery nurse.

After the twin crisis, Elaine discovered that Richard planned to expand the identity protocol to unrelated children. She copied records and tried to leave with an infant whose mother had died during a trial.

Samuel helped her.

They raised the child as Laura.

“You knew I was not biologically yours?” Laura asked.

“You were ours from the moment we took you home.”

“That is not the question.”

“Yes.”

Laura stepped backward.

The detective who exposed the Whitmore identity conspiracy had been raised under another concealed identity.

Samuel insisted the infant’s biological mother was unknown.

Grace disagreed.

She opened a final file taken from Stonegate.

The mother was listed as Margaret Whitmore.

Margaret stared at it.

“I never had another pregnancy.”

“Not naturally,” Grace said.

Richard had used a preserved embryo from Margaret and Henry during the adrenal-treatment program.

Laura could be their biological daughter.

That would make her Anna and Rebecca’s full sister.

It would also explain why Grace selected Laura’s police district for the anonymous warning.

“You knew who I might be,” Laura said.

Grace did not deny it.

“I needed an investigator Richard could not dismiss as an outsider.”

“You used Anna’s rescue to pull me into my own identity case.”

“Yes.”

Laura looked at Anna.

“I am sorry.”

Anna shook her head.

“You came when I called. Whatever they planned, you chose what happened next.”

Outside, Jason’s family remained surrounded by police vehicles and reporters. Their legal teams fought over warrants, guardianship orders, and corporate control.

No final arrest resolved the case.

No court declared which twin was Anna.

No judge decided whether Grace, Evelyn, Rebecca, Laura, or Anna controlled Henry’s legacy.

The seventy-four-day conspiracy had failed.

The family system behind it remained alive.

Then Laura reopened the original photograph from Jason handing over the stolen medicine.

She enlarged the reflection.

Everyone had believed the woman receiving the bottle was Rebecca.

It was not.

The woman wore Rebecca’s coat and hairstyle, but her left hand carried a distinctive burn scar.

Samuel recognized it.

“Elaine.”

Laura’s adoptive mother had supposedly died eight years earlier.

A second police car arrived outside the research building.

Its rear door opened.

The older woman who stepped out carried Anna’s missing prescription bottle and an evidence folder.

Laura stared at her.

“Mom?”

Elaine Reed looked first at Laura, then at Margaret.

“I did not take Laura from the Whitmores,” she said.

Margaret gripped the edge of the table.

“Then whose child is she?”

Elaine opened the folder.

Inside was an ultrasound photograph showing three embryos.

“Laura was not the child we removed,” she said. “She was the child Richard ordered us to leave behind.”

Anna looked toward the empty doorway behind Elaine.

“Who did you take?”

A second woman began stepping from the police vehicle.

Only her shoes and the hem of her gray coat became visible.

Elaine turned toward Anna and Rebecca.

“The sister who knows which one of you died at nine.”

The woman raised her face.

Anna’s expression collapsed before anyone else could see why.
